Summary Of A Reluctant Writer's Entry Into A Community Of Writers By Chris Street
Chris Street wrote the article, “A Reluctant Writer’s Entry into a Community of Writers.” In Street’s introduction, he describes how he had a student named John who seemed angry, and didn’t seem to like writing. Finally, Street decided to change his ways of teaching his class. He began to let his students talk about what they cared about and what they knew, while he listened. This began to change his students writing. Street could see more interest in the student’s writing, and even John seem to enjoy this way more. Reading this I was very surprised that Street was willing to change how he taught his whole class just to see his students write well. A lot of my writing teachers in the past never seemed to take an interest whether their students did good or not. They taught what had to be taught, and you …show more content…
Not only did he write with them, but he also shared personal information about himself that could help the students like John, connect with him more. This way the students saw Street as a fellow writer, and not just a teacher that would fill their papers with “red pen.” Allowing the students to pick their own topic for their writings, Street noticed he could see hidden skills. In my past writing classes I never had a teacher that would “write with me,” or give me positive feedback. But, this semester I’ve noticed two of my professors write with me and give me positive feedback. Whether it’s writing a paper or doing a journal while reading, my professor always gives me feedback to enhance my learning. I like that Street would share his personal experiences with his students to develop trust. I especially loved when the teachers I’ve had in the past tell me a story relating to the paper I turned in, making me feel like they have knowledge or interest in what I just

    The piece of work titled “Becoming a Writer”, written by Junot Diaz, is a short story showing the importance of dedication and persistence in order to become a good author. Diaz begins by explaining his difficulty in getting past the “75 page mark” in a novel he had been working on. He explains how no matter how hard he tried, it felt as if he was “chained to the sinking ship of those 75 pages and there was no key and no patching the hole in the hull”. Diaz explains how it is hard to continue his work after a long 5 years of writer’s block and begins to think that maybe he should move on to another profession. In pursuit of a new career, Diaz’s fiancée suggests that he make a list of all the things he is talented at, however his list was relatively short and only had but three points. Diaz speaks about how he would just look at the list and hope for the hint of a spark to uplift his spirits… but that spark never came. Shortly after, he sets aside his work and begins to disengage himself from the writing community; no longer did he attend book clubs, or even visit bookstores. In his downward spiral into normality, Diaz gives it one more go and decides to find just one good thing in the pages to get him back on track. He separated the 75 pages and “despite every part of him shrieking no no no, he jumped back down the rabbit hole again.” And three years later he could finally look at his pile of pages and say “done.” Diaz concludes his argument in saying that no one is perfect, and can just pick up a pencil and start writing a novel, but you have to work hard and never give…

    In recent years, the American education system has been focused on a “one-size fits all” system in which all students are given the same expectations and are graded on the same standards.     The extra practice certainly would have benefited me, but that realization is nothing special. All the times, I could have been sharpening my craft, fine-tuning my vocabulary, polishing my punctuation, but instead I submitted essays written with the bare amount of effort. And what was my reward? A shiny A. I grew used to being complacent. Out of all King’s advice not taking writing lightly hit me the hardest, because I do indeed take it lightly. This is something I should work on, and hopefully something I can teach my future students. In the classroom, I want my students to enjoy writing and to take it seriously. It is important that they know that writing will not go away. They will need to be able to write to be able to function in this world. I hope they realize not only the functionality of writing but also the freedom it can bring. I, for example, find writing my feelings down after a particularly bad day helps my brain flush out the negativity. I would love for my students to share the feelings of flushing out your feelings on the page. The reality is more along the lines that I will be going on rants about passive voice and other grammatical errors like King does during the “Toolbox” section. I already want to do that during my field experience as it is. Hearing those eighth graders say, “they care about win” on Thursday hurt my soul. I realize that at the middle school level I should help them harvest their love for writing rather than squash their budding passion as I take off point after point on an a paper. That made me quite ashamed and gave me the idea that I should not share my writing. I do not want to pass that fear on to my future students. From now on I plan on trying not to take writing lightly.
