Summary: Math Is Useless By Alan Bass
“Math is Useless”
By Alan Bass in Math Study Skills I labeled this section “Math is Useless” to get your attention. Now that I have it, completely banish the idea that “math is useless from you mind forever”. If our nation (or planet) could pick one subject for everyone to be really good at, it would be without any doubt, mathematics. Math is the foundation for every science. Math is the ultimate in critical and analytical thinking. Math fires rockets into space, shows insurance companies what is fair price, tells psychologists that therapy X works and the drug Y doesn’t. It is true that nobody is going to hire you to factor a polynomial or solve a linear equation. But people are also not going to hire you to write essays on the Civil War,

Do you really know what went on during the holocaust well Jane Yolen wrote a special book about how life was like in the concentration camps which later turned into a movie. There are many different things that go on in between the book and the movie like how there is a major age difference and how Rivka ends up being her cousin. That is some but there's also many similarities like how Hanna still tells her stories to keep everybody together and how Hanna still sacrifices herself for Rivka. Well I think that differences or not they still both teach that valuable lesson that one after one the deaths were adding and one after one they were disappearing.…

Ever since I can remember, I loved mathematics. The exactness of it marveled me, while its complexity intrigued me. While others regarded math as straight forward, I believed that it required an ingenuity even higher than that of the arts. To me, a math problem was a chaotic sort of Lego pieces and the answer to the problem was the finished Lego set. The real fun was in devising the instructions on how to get from the original jumbled mess to the final pristine solution. However, the other kids around me scorned math and relished in what they considered to be more imaginative pursuits, such as reading a book or drawing pictures. If I could show my peers math from the way I see it, I was sure its beauty would astound them, and they would appreciate it as much as I do.…

What stood out to me in Chapter 6 was the chunking section on pg. 209. I am currently reading a book called "A Mind for Numbers" by Barbara Oakley; it is a book primarily about how to study math and science, however, I am see that the techniques could be applied to the arts or just about any other subject. Chapters 4 and 7 primarily focus on how to chunk. The main concepts of the book are primarily about how memory works and how to make it work for you. It explains the concepts of spaced repetition, focused and diffused attention, and procrastination, and one of the most intriguing to me the memory palace or method of loci. I knew of the concept of using a memory palace, but even though I have used it and seen the benefits of it I never used…

In “When Bright Girls Decide Math Is a Waste of Time,” Susan Jacoby conveys her thoughts on how girls tend to dislike math and science even though they make good grades. Jacoby claims that many girls feel that it is masculine subject and can quickly lose interest. It has also been proven that boys will have better grades in math by the time twelfth-grade hits. Many girls do not want to participate because they are afraid of becoming too smart or advanced, which makes guys lose interest in them. By avoiding these subjects, it makes understanding how the world works much harder. Many women may get jobs in education or fine arts as a way to avoid such subjects. Jacoby presented many realistic situations that made the piece more relatable and interesting.…

The very nature of a man cannot solely be seen through his actions alone or how society perceives him. What makes up the true essence of a person is much deeper and much more complex than this. In the aftermath of the previous year’s I realized that if I put my mind and effort in something I can do it. Math was a subject that I thought was going to always bring me down. But since my love for sports is greater I knew I had work I had to do, and now I actually love math. When given the chance I watch math video on YouTube. I have a favorite YouTuber names Vsause. His videos contain a mixture of science, math, and physiology. One particular video that is my favorite is when he is describing how humans have sent out many messages out in space that gives out a descriptions of who and what we are and things that are popular in our society at the time; as well as the coordinates to our location. It’s so interesting how math has a major part in life and in everything we do. When in geometry class I thought to myself “How is this going to help me in the future?” But later on, when reading the history of math, geometry is actually useful. We use if for many things like architectural designing, and in computer…

Moreover, by eliminating Algebra from schools, the districts can save billions of dollars on a better school foundation that can teach basic math courses other than just Algebra. It appears that school are just wasting more money on a course that students understand they will not need this course in order to pursue their career where they may not use algebra. Thus algebra seems unnecessary for someone’s success in succeeding in a person’s…

The teens of 2012 thought that the world might end was their biggest issue. As a teen of the twenty second century, I know how ridiculous their thoughts were. Of course, the world would not end., and it didn’t. However, the people of 1818 had a better reason to panic. You see, ever since that fateful year, the people of planet earth have lived without a subject known as math. Although there are several theories explaining the loss of math, I have been taught by my parents that the loss of math was because of a miscalculation.…
