Summa Theologica
Summa Theologica – Thomas Aquinas

Theology based on scripture
Theology leaves people with the knowledge that leads to eternal happiness
How reason, before faith, can know the existence of nature of God
The existence of God can be established through the use of reason
So far in this course we’ve seen platonic philosophy
With Aquinas, we are seeing Aristotelian philosophy
Avicenna d. 1037
Averroes d. 1198

Whether existence of God is self-evident? NO.
Self Evident: Predict is implied within the subject
Ex. Blue is a color.
Unfalsifiable
God isn’t self evident because we don’t know the essence of God
Page 14.
Something can be self evident in itself
How can we know something we don’t know?
We learn and demonstrate from our senses
Something can’t be self evident to us because we don’t know the definition of God
Whether existence of God can be rationally demonstrated? YES.
Cause (a priori) and effect (a posteriori) page 15
To demonstrate God’s exist we have to start the effect
From the effect we proceed to the knowledge of the cause
Relative to us the effect is prior to the cause
We start with the effect and reason backwards towards the cause
What does he mean by effects?
Sensible things
What does he mean by cause?
Intelligible things
For Aquinas, all knowledge comes from the senses
“And from every effect….his effects are known to us..” (15)
Whether God exits?
We learn 5 things in the way God exists
1. Things are in motion – things change
2. Everything has an efficient cause, other than itself
3. Things are born and they die
4. Some things are better than others
5. Even non rational things act for specific ends
Distinction between potentiality and actuality (page 16)
To get from potentially knowing Dutch to actually knowing Dutch you need someone to teach me Dutch
You need someone who actually knows Dutch to move me from potentially knowing Dutch to actually knowing it

According to the cosmological argument, if every positive fact that has ever obtained has an explanation, then there must have existed at least one self-existent thing. It cannot be know whether such a being still exists, or if it satisfies any particular definition of God. If PSR is not always true, and there were no self-existent thing, existence would have no explanation, which in and of itself does not constitute evidence that God does not…

Anselm, then posits a question of whether something of this nature exists, to which he builds an argument on the basis that if a person understands what it is meant by the term God then that person is motivated to the proposition that God exists. He argues that regardless of whether you believe in the existence of God or not you understand what is meant by the term God. To assert this point Anselm says even the fool (non-believer) when hearing the definition “understands what he hears, and what he understands exists in his understanding- even if he doesn’t think it exists.” He then makes the clear distinction that it is different for something to exist in understanding and to exist in reality. He furthers this point by using the analogy of the Painter who understands (in his…

The example of the apple that was discussed in class is a good example of this claim. A person can understand that an apple contains seeds which can grow into an apple tree. The tree can then produce apples, continuing the cycle of causes for the creation of the apple. The fact that this cycle can be thought to go on for a long time, but the cause of the first apple had to start at some point. By this observation, a person can determine on their own that whatever created the first apple or apple seed is greater than what created it, what caused it is what is considered God.…

Moreover, existence cannot be seen to be a predicate of God because, more generally, existence is not a predicate. I argue this because, as Hume and Kant have written, having an idea of something and then having it exist changes nothing about the nature of the thing. In fact “whatever we conceive, we conceive to be existent” (Hume, Treatise on Human Nature). Therefore, unlike describing a bird as blue, describing it as existing changes nothing about our perception of or in fact the bird itself at all.…

St. Anselm was a well-known philosopher in his time and had a much known argument for Gods existence. He started his argument by defining that God is something greater than which nothing else can be thought. He goes on to argue that even though you have thought of something, or have it in your…

Throughout the course of time, many philosophers, dogmatic religions and even individual human beings themselves have tried to prove the existence of God. The recurrent question that constantly arises is whether or not you can prove the existence of God solely by rational thinking alone. To that, the answer is no. It is not possible to prove the existence of God solely by rational thinking as you also need to incorporate aspects of faith, but rational thinking helps solidify your beliefs pertaining to God and leaves the answers we cannot conceive rationally up to faith. You cannot understand something outside of your existence rationally because you cannot experience it or see it; you can only theorize, believe and trust in it. You will never be able to reason what you have no knowledge of. In this essay, I will argue that in…

Thomas Aquinas. Again, he believed in God but disagreed with Anselm’s argument proving his existence. Aquinas raises questions about God’s self-evident existence. He claims that things can be self-evident in two ways: in itself and both in itself and to us; even though something may exist self-evidently in itself, this self-evidence may not be known to us as humans and therefore, its existence would not be self-evident to us. This is exactly what Aquinas proposes God to be. God is self-evident in himself because he is his own essence. However, seeing as this essence is unknown to us (as we do not know enough about him), the statement ‘God exists’ is not self-evident to us. This, again, is another criticism which holds weight against the Ontological Argument, highlighting a glaring weakness in its…

Against this motion, my first argument is the ‘argument from degree – there must exist a being that possesses all properties to the maximum possible degree’. This suggests that God is omnipotent and he is also described as being omnipresent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnipresent, and immanent. These describe the attributes God has. In the Bible God for example is described as a father, king, judge and a warrior so we know his nature, therefore we can say that God is not cruel and is not bad etc. This is yet another way of knowing what God is like. In Genesis the first chapter of the bible there is the Creation story, saying that we humans were created in his image so we can understand him. For example it could be argued that miracles are another way of experiencing God and praying. There are Christians who believe that there is a way of knowing what God is like because Jesus was born on Earth his son and he died to save the world from sin, that…

Certainly, the idea of God, or a supremely perfect being, is one which I find within me just as surely as the idea of any shape or number. And my understanding that it belongs to his nature that he always exists is no less clear and distinct than is the case when I prove of any shape or number that some property belongs to its nature. Hence, even if it turned out that not everything on which I have meditated in these past days is true, I ought still to regard the existence of God as having at least the same level of certainty as I have hitherto attributed to the truths of mathematics… But from the fact that I cannot think of God except as existing, it follows that existence is inseparable from God, and hence that he really exists. It is not that my thought makes it so, or imposes any necessity on anything; on the contrary, it is the necessity of the thing itself, namely the existence of God which determines my thinking in this respect.…

Having good English skills is seen in correlation with better quality of life and a higher income. The Netherlands has always been a country that lives on trade, and being a multilingual country helps them strive this (Wittenborg, 2016). This fact could be an opportunity for MARNAR. Doing business in a country with good English skills makes it easier to build relationships and be successful.
