COMMUNICATION SATELLITES
A communication satellite is an artificial satellite sent to space for the purpose of telecommunications. Modern communications satellites use a variety of orbits including: geostationary, molniya orbits, elliptical orbits, and low (polar and non-polar earth orbits.
For fixed (point to point) services, communication satellites provide a microwave radio relay technology complementary to that of communication cables. They are also used for mobile applications such as communications ships, vehicles, planes and hand – held terminals and for TV and radio broadcasting.

NETWORKS
A computer network, or simply a network is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information .where at least one process in one device is able to send/receive data to/from at least one process residing in a remote device, then the two devices are said to be in a network. Simply, more than one computer interconnected through a communication medium for information interchange is called a computer network. Networks may be classified according to a wide variety of characteristics, such as the medium used to transport the data, communications protocol used, scale, topology and organizational scope.

EXTRANETS
An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside, for specific business or educational purposes. In a business-to-business context, an extranet can be viewed as an extension of an organization's intranet that is extended to users outside the organization, usually partners, vendors, and suppliers, in isolation from all other Internet users. In contrast,

Satellite signals are similar to microwave which require a direct line of sight to ensure proper transmission. Satellites require that a satellite is in geosynchronous orbit of the earth and receiver must be locked on satellites orbit at all times to maintain connection. Satellites can cover large areas since they are in high orbit they can relay signals through other…

Satellites have benefited our everyday lives. "Communication satellites are responsible for instantaneous television coverage of events all over the globe, for the speed of international banking and finance, for the almost-immediate delivery of vast amounts of information, and for international e-mail and telephone service to all parts of the Earth." ("Neal 186") When a person watches television, the television is sent from the station to a satellite and to a local provider. Without satellites, a person would be able to only watch local stations, but with satellites a person can watch a television program from anywhere in the world, talk to anyone, or even send e-mail.…

In 1945 Arthur C. Clarke wrote an article entitled "The Future of World Communications" for the magazine Wireless World. This article, which the editors renamed "Extra-Terrestrial Relays", was published in the October issue. In it Clarke described the properties of the geostationary orbit, a circular orbit in the equatorial plane of the earth such that a satellite appears to hover over a fixed point on the equator. The period of revolution is equal to the period of rotation of the earth with respect to the stars, or 23 hours 56 minutes 4.1 seconds, and thus by Kepler's third law the orbital radius is 42,164 km. Taking into account the radius of the earth, the height of a satellite above the equator is 35,786 km.…

A satellite is defined as any object that orbits any other object. Satellites can be celestial, such as a moon orbiting a planet in the solar system, or a planet in the solar system orbiting the sun. Satellites can also be man-made. Man-made satellites are typically launched into outer space from earth to collect data, photos and other information about Earth and all the many things that exist around it.…

Communications Satellites have been around since 1958. A communications satellite is a spacecraft that orbits the Earth and relays messages, radio, telephone and television signals. Stations on the ground, called earth stations, transmit signals to the satellite, which then relays the signal to other earth stations. As a newer form of communications, communications satellites are very useful in bringing the people in the world together. Communications between people that used to take days or even months, now take only minutes or seconds using satellites.…

The outer space has always fascinated people on the earth and communication through space evolved as an offshoot of ideas for space travel. The earliest idea of using artificial satellites for communications is found in a science fiction Brick Moon by Edward Evert Hale, published in 1869-70. While the early fictional accounts of satellite and space communications bear little resemblance to the technology as it exists to day, they are of significance since they represent the origins of the idea from which the technology eventually evolved. In the area of satellite communications, the technology has been responsive to the imaginative dreams. Hence it is also expected that technological innovations will lead the evolution of satellite communications towards the visions of today.…

IntroductionThe term “computer network’’ means a collection of autonomous computers interconnected by a single technology. Two computers are said to be interconnected if they are able to exchange information. The connection need not be via a copper wire; fiber optics, microwaves, infrared, and communication satellites can also be used. Networks come in many sizes, shapes and forms. Uses of Computer Networks 1. Business Applications 2. Home Applications 3. Mobile Users 4. Social Issues Example NetworksThere are different kinds of networks, large and small, well known and less well known. They have different goals, scales, and technologies. The InternetThe Internet is not a network at all, but a vast collection of different networks that use certain common protocols and provide certain common services. The ARPANETThe story begins in the late 1950s. At the height of the Cold War, the DoD wanted a command-and-control network that could survive a nuclear war. At that time, all military communications used the public telephone network, which was considered vulnerable. NSFNETBy the late 1970s, NSF (the U.S. National Science Foundation) saw the enormous impact the ARPANET was having on university research, allowing scientists across the country to share data and collaborate on research projects. However, to get on the ARPANET, a university had to have a research contract with the DoD, which many did not have.Internet UsageTraditionally (meaning 1970 to about 1990), the Internet and its predecessors had four main applications: 1. E-mail. 2. News. 3. Remote login. 4. File transfer.…
