Successful College Student
While being a first-generation college student can be incredibly difficult leaving you with a feeling that no one understands what you're going through, there is one trait that comes to mind when I think about what it takes to succeed as a student. A successful college student has to exemplify determination. Being able to push through the obstacles in each course and throughout every aspect of your life is what can make or break a college education. I work part time in order to fund my education and go to school full time in order to stay on tract to graduate. With work, school, and organization commitments, time can be a burden and, personally, there are times that I become overwhelmed to the point that I want to give up on an assignment or …show more content…
While I may not be able to go to every social event and every school football game, between working and school I am determined to make time to study for exams and complete assignments in order to keep my grade from suffering. While this seems like a simple task, many college students struggle with committing to studies. At times, this can mean missing out on something fun but by managing the time I have and completing what needs to be done I am able to get excellent grades. Another key aspect in how I am determined to achieve a college education is “to-do lists.” As previously discussed, time can be a burden and fitting in social activities can be challenging. Every week, I create a list of assignments and organization meetings combined with my work schedule with time intervals for when I should complete each assignment. With this quick task, I can manage my time and add in social activities so I still have the opportunity to balance school and social life. When one is set or “determined” to meet a goal, it is easier to do so and after meeting one you are confident in being able to succeed and meet the following. As a result, with an abundance of commitments, tasks, and stress on top of it all, in order to gain a college education, I set smaller goals for myself along with time management skills in order to stay determined to reach my career goals as I successfully complete smaller do-able tasks day by

One of the most important first steps is to learn about time management. Learning the strategies of a good time management system and applying them ultimately will benefit the student tremendously. Stanford (n.d.) states that time management skills will help students manage their goals effectively which will assist them in completing homework assignments on schedule and prepare for examinations. Students will have to monitor their time and adjust it accordingly for studies and assignments. While monitoring my time, I found it helpful in selecting the best times to study and complete my homework assignments. It is suggested that students spend at least two hours studying for every hour of class time. I personally plan on following this rule to give me adequate time to complete my assignments. Every student is different, but he can find a time management system that works best to balance school, work, and family. The planning system utilizing a list with prioritizing tasks as “A”, “B”, or “C” along with an “Outlook” calendar seems to work best. Students also need to learn how to set goals and to incorporate their short- term, mid-term and long-term goals into their academic lives. This will allow them to recognize how necessary their short-term goals are and how they affect their long-term goals. One cannot achieve long-term goals without first succeeding in their short-term goals. They go hand in hand. For example, a long-term goal is to get a BA degree, but I cannot accomplish this without first having success in my short-term goal of attending all classes and completing all work assignments on time. For success in another long-term goal of good health, I would need to be committed to eating healthy foods and not over eat because of stress. Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep regardless of other commitments will ensure students a refreshed and…

The second goal on my list is to develop better study habits. In the my past high school years I’ve had a laid back attitude toward work that had to be done outside of school. However, I know that my past work habits are not the best approach to college courses considering the large amount of work given by the teachers. In order to achieve this goal I will have to organize my time wisely. I also would have to isolate my self in a setting where I would have zero distractions such as a public library. I need to learn to stay focused on my work and not get easily distracted by tempting games or television. I have to learn to mange my time and not procrastinate. Never put off till…

I believe that for a student to be successful he/she needs to meet failure. A successful student is one who benefits the most in school and out, from extracurricular activities to sports. Throughout life people are faced with a variety of obstacles. How they choose to overcome these obstacles determines whether they become successful or not, it would be nice if there was an instruction manual to tell one how to be successful, how to overcome these obstacles.
