A Success Story

“To believe in God is to realize that life has a meaning,” the philosophy that has molded, steered and paved the way to success for Dr. Nimfa Tolipas Torremoro, the OIC Dean of the Graduate Studies of Samar College, Catbalogan City. Known to her friends and relatives as Impa, Dr. Torremoro is an authentic substantiation of feat begotten from hardwork, sacrifice and determination, the prime ingredients in achieving the crest of success. Born on the 10th of November, 1962 in Paranas, Samar to Mr Rustico Patilan Tolipas and Mrs. Milagros Pacalda Borja, both high school graduates, Dr. Nimfa T. Torremoro, one of the three girls in a brood of eight, lived an exceedingly ordinary life. She was not saved from the hardships that a child lived through in a situation where comfort is but a wish. Studied her elementary at the Wright Central Elementary School in Paranas from 1969-1975, despite her youth, Dr. Torremoro exuded positive characters, embodied worthy values seemingly innate to a person destined to greatness. “I always practice benevolence wherever I am,” she stresses. Even as a child and notwithstanding their not-so-privileged lifestyle, she was still optimistic and determined. She has a very positive outlook in life. “As an elementary pupil, I have to wake up at 5:00 o’clock in the morning to sell native delicacies cooked by my grandmother, through the streets of my hometown. While selling the goods, I have to shout to get the attention of the town folks, so that I can go home early and get my 10-centavo share for every peso of goods sold. Wonderful!” she recalls. Inevitably, as a child being exposed to the reality of working hard in order to earn, she has set a goal to herself, and that is to become a professional and to go abroad and earn dollars. For her secondary (high school) education, she studied at the Wright Community High School in Paranas, Samar from the year 1975 to 1979. Here, she made friends with lots of schoolmates and consequently made lots of blissful, and naughty memories, that are manifestations of her active and cool childhood, particularly that of being a high school student. One of the most unforgettable anecdotes during her high school was when she was on her first year. “I jokingly stole my friend’s “baon” at the Home Economics Room during lunch. Upon knowing it, she chased me, and so I turned to run, not knowing that there were tables right behind me and Blaag! Down I went. “It’s Karma,” my friend said,” she cheerfully narrated. After high school, she proceeded to take her college education at the Samar State Polytechnic College, now Samar State University, Catbalogan City in 1979 where she took up Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (BSIE) major in Foods Technology. It is during these times that she had experienced the real sense of the term “hardship.” Her being away from her family and living in a boarding house, dependent of a rare subsidy or allowance from her parents back home almost dampened her hopes. “There were times when my weekly allowance came very late or worse, it never arrived at all. This caused much suffering on my part,” she recollected. Yet, thinking about what her future would become without...
