Prospects Of Lingua Franca Led To A Successful Election In Nigeria. A lingua franca is a language used for common communication among people of a country with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds like Nigeria. For instance, in some countries in east Africa like Tanzania and Kenya, Swahili has been adopted as the lingua franca. A lingua franca is supposed to be a language accepted and adopted by a country and spoken among natives who have their different native languages while success is defined as an event that accomplishes its intended purpose (Web definition). In Nigeria, presently, the language which can be regarded as the lingua franca is the English language, the language of the colonizers. English language has served the country over the years as both the official language and the lingua franca. However, Nigeria as a multi-ethnic country with diverse cultural and linguistic affinities needs a lingua franca even if it means throwing off the last yoke of colonialism by replacing English language with a lingua franca. A lingua franca can do a lot of good for a country. As a means of effective communication among all tribes and ethnic groups in the country, a lingua franca will promote unity and harmony. When there is a common language spoken by all the ethnic groups in Nigeria, there is every tendency that the various ethnic language and dialects will be de-emphasized. This will lead to people in the country regarding one another as brothers and sisters. It will facilitate easy communication and understanding. However, there are some places in Nigeria where the people don’t know what English is all about; there are a lot of commotions, violence and disasters that happens there frequently. Most especially, the northern part of Nigeria, it is difficult for the people to learn and speak English because their fore-fathers don’t believe in education but farming. One cannot be recognized socially or have a say in public if he or she is illiterate or not conversant and these kinds of people cannot be permitted to campaign for any political position. These kinds of people don’t have anything to offer their community or social environment which brings about social violence when it is time for political election. There are some qualities every individual needs to posses before they can be permitted to campaign for any election. Firstly, the person needs to have a Senior School certificate examination degree (SSCE), and then a bachelor’s degree in any undergraduate majors from a university or a higher national degree (HND) from a polytechnic and lastly the person needs to have a clean criminal background which is very crucial as far as the political election is concerned. The more educated people from western, southern and eastern part of Nigeria had to migrate to the northern part to rule them because of their ignorant and this brought about massive massacre violence since the northerners refused to be ruled by the so called visitors. They refer to other region of the country as visitors and it lasted for some decades before the northerners came to a reasonable conclusion by going to school to learn morals, respects and how to communicate to people from other parts of the country via the lingua franca so as to lead people in one love and true harmony. English can only be learnt at school and it is mandatory for a leader to be fluent in the lingua franca so that he or she can represent his or her region at every point in time. After some time when the northerners are now in school and are more educated, they are been given the opportunity to campaign in the democracy system of the country. Democracy is defined as the political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representatives (Web definition). Nigeria had a fair election when the northerners ignorant was abolished and they were able to understand the significance of education and today’s statistics shows that the northerners are the most successful politician in Nigeria. In addition, a lingua franca is a leveler. It is a language spoken by the rich and the poor, the noble and the peasants. A lingua franca bridges the yearning gap between the rich and the poor as it is natural that the person is sharing the same language with his fellow citizen. More so, a lingua franca is desirable for national integrity. A country with a distinguished lingua franca is identified with the language and as such, it is respected among comity of nations. In fact, other nations look down on nation which uses another country’s language as its lingua franca. It is even worse if the lingua franca is the language of a colonizer. The adoption of a lingua franca could be fraught with a lot of problems. The first problem is that of acceptance. The ethnic groups always cling to their different native languages which they regard as their mother’s tongue. As a result of this, making them to accept a lingua franca may mean to them dropping their mother’s tongue for another language. The second problem is that in Nigeria, the several ethnic groups always associate the number of the speakers of their ethnic languages with population. They believe that languages have to do with geographical spread and thus, they resist every attempt to undermine the use of their native languages. The rejection of lingua franca in the northern part of Nigeria caused a lot of people their lives because of political positions in the government and it led to a brutally elections in the past history of the country. Nigeria needs to have a national lingua franca policy as a matter of urgency. If the country could gradually and persistently pursue a policy on lingua franca, a language could emerge out of the various ethnic languages we have. A lingua franca is always a mélange of the two or more languages, especially the languages of the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria, such lingua franca will be nationally accepted and it would not be regarded by other major ethnic groups as local imperialism but the acceptance of English language as the official lingua franca made success about the election in Nigerian till date.
