The offshore oil & gas market continues to grow at an increasing pace, as oil & gas operators continue to discover reserves in deeper water areas where subsea development is highly required to make the recovery economically viable. As such, the requirement for maintaining and boosting recovery rates from these subsea wells has increased and will continue to do so. As a result of this, need to maintain and boost production, subsea production, and processing systems is anticipated to play a key role in the future of the offshore oil & gas market.
The factors mentioned above drive the growth of the global subsea production and processing systems market. It is estimated to reach $24.6 billion by 2018, with a CAGR of 6.0% from 2013 to 2018. The increasing demand for energy is

ExxonMobil is a vertically integrated oil and gas company that’s mission is to “find safe, efficient, and responsible ways to bring affordable energy to the dynamic global markets. This success will be “built on long-term planning, disciplined investment, new leading-edge technologies, unmatched risks management and operational excellence” (ExxonMobil, 2014, p. 1). In the 2013 annual report, ExxonMobil outlined a strategic initiative of new leading-edge technologies such as “collaborating with XTO, who has a strong acreage position and operational expertise, to increase its Brakken recovery, enhance drilling, completion (the process of making an oil well ready for production), and operational excellence, in tight rock formation in the United States”. This collaboration gives Exxon “numerous opportunities to test its new technologies as well as implement its proven technologies for immediate benefits, such as the XFrac” (ExxonMobil, 2014, p. 19).…

Today, with the continual and rapidly growing need of energy demand by big nations like United States and China continuing to furnish their domestic consumptions of oil have led to increased prices of gasoline whereby alternative forms of energy production are sought. With this in mind, offshore drilling can be a viable option for satiating the need of oil and also to boost the economy of the nation. In this report, I am going to discuss how the current Deepwater Horizon rig explosion has led to disastrous oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico causing environmental problems and also discuss how the oil spill if resolved and with safe and secure drilling techniques, the economic impact of offshore drilling can outweigh the environmental issues.…

Government statistics still can't confirm what happened to the majority of the millions of gallons of oil that leaked from the well, and even more importantly how much damage it’s causing underwater. The Gulf Coast economy is suffering, and endangered sea turtles, dolphins and many other marine creatures have been affected.. Drilling for natural gas offshore, in some instances hundreds of miles away from the nearest landmass, poses a number of different challenges over drilling onshore. The actual drilling mechanism used to delve into the sea floor is much the same as can be found on an onshore rig. However, with drilling at sea, the sea floor can sometimes be thousands of feet below sea level. Therefore, while with onshore drilling the ground provides a platform from which to drill, at sea an artificial drilling platform must be constructed. Drilling offshore dates back as early as 1869, when one of the first patents was granted to T.F. Rowland for his offshore drilling rig design. This rig was designed to operate in very shallow water, but the anchored four legged tower bears much resemblance to modern offshore rigs. It wasn't until after World War II that the first offshore well, completely out of sight from land, was drilled in the Gulf of Mexico in…

Open Water Wireline (OWWL) enables slickline and electric-line operations services to be performed in subsea wells. To date this intervention technology has not been deployed in water depths greater than 500 m, much less the 3,000 m water depth our system is designed to operate in. The traditional grease injection-type dynamic seal containing well pressure around the braided electric line is replaced by our streamline cable and a stuffing box-type dynamic seal system. This combination simplifies the subsea well intervention package control system and hydraulics necessary to maintain separation of the wellbore fluids from the environment.…

This laboratory experiment has as objective to introduce to the rheological properties of drilling fluid, including plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, Gel strength(GS), exponent of ffow behaviour of power fluid (n), consistency index of power law fluid(k) and yield point (YP). It is also an objective of this experiment to measure the rheological properties using an equipment called FANN viscometer and to control the mud properties. To achieve these objectives, devices such as mud balance, FANN viscometer, mud mixer and electronic mass scale are used. Four groups developed four different muds: mud 1 (water + bentonite), mud 2 (water+ bentonite + barite), mud 3(water+ bentonite + barite + polymer), mud 4 (water + bentonite + barite + polymer + CaCl2) in order to compare the rheological properties of each. It was observed that the density of mud 2 increased due to the adding of barite and there was an increase in the density of the muds, because of the adding of bentonite, polymer and CaCl2. All the mud behave as a Bingham plastic fluid. To conclude, with was observed that the components used to develop a mud define the rheological properties of the mud. Therefore, It is important to measure the ideal components to mix in order to get the best cost / benefit ratio for the drilling of a well.…

The anticipated long-term growth in U.S. natural gas demand will require the construction and operation of both onshore and offshore LNG terminals. Recently, several offshore LNG terminals have been proposed to increase LNG deliveries to market centers where onshore facilities cannot realistically be sited. The technologies and experience developed for offshore oil infrastructure and onshore LNG terminals can be applied to the development and operation of offshore LNG terminals. The proposed offshore LNG terminals benefit from the record of safety and reliability that has been achieved by the offshore oil industry and by onshore LNG terminals around the world. Each of the essential components of Broadwater’s FSRU has been used safely and reliably in both offshore petroleum and onshore LNG terminal operations. The main difference is the scale of the application proposed for Broadwater. Offshore siting innovations for LNG facilities necessitate new rules and guidelines for the design, construction and maintenance of such facilities. Since 1862, ABS has developed such rules and guidelines for the maritime industry. ABS has published a guide for building and classing offshore LNG terminals that puts forth a comprehensive set of criteria.80 The classification process begins with an assessment of design and continues throughout the operational life of the offshore LNG facility. Such oversight ensures the continued adherence to the ABS rules and guidelines and other relevant standards beyond the initiation of service through the installation and operation of the facility.81 LAI’s technology study objectives were threefold: first, to evaluate the various types of offshore LNG facilities; second, to identify the technology limitations of the FSRU, its major components and the YMS; and, third, to assess operational issues with the FSRU and LNG transfer. LAI’s technology review was based on data obtained from the draft and final EISs from other…

Fresh water shortage is a growing problem facing the world, especially in the Middle East. With the rapid increase in fuel price, seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is increasingly becoming a popular option for water supply. To date several sea water reverse osmosis desalination plants have been built in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to meet the growing demand for fresh water in the country. The Fujairah Water and Power Plant was acquired in 2006 by a joint venture company between the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority and Sembcorp, forming the Emirates Sembcorp Water and Power Company (ESWPC). The plant is operated under agreement by Sembcorp Gulf O&M Company (SGOMC). Serving as a brown field project, Sembcorp, through ESWPC Fujairah IWPP has made a commitment to supply 535 megawatts (MW) of power and 100 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of water, as well as an additional commitment of augmenting power supply to 760 MW from Feb 2009. Until 2005, the plant was the largest SWRO plant in the world. Today, after almost 5 years of operation, it still is the second largest SWRO plant worldwide and continues to provide inspiration for practical design and operational guidance for future plants.…
