Title:The Effectiveness of Styroglue in School/Home Projects
Abstract:
Styrofoam and gasoline are known as roof sealant. Some people use this to patch holes in their roofs. The researchers found out that a mixture of gasoline and Styrofoam is not only used as roof sealant but also an alternate for commercial glue/stick glue, and it can be used to do crafts or projects in school or at home.
The mixture of gasoline and Styrofoam was applied to folders and fasten these to a corkboard. Half and whole short folders fasten to the corkboard attached in just a few minutes because of their weight. Two and more pieces of short folders fasten to the board attached for a longer period of time. The lighter is the material fastened, the shorter is the time needed. Heavier materials need more time before they are completely attached.
Styrofoam and Styrofoam products fill up 30% of our landfill space, and landfills are fast becoming full. On average, each one of us puts out about 5 pounds of trash a day. This adds up to about a ton of trash per person every year that eventually ends up in a landfill. This investigatory project shows that we can help lighten some environmental problems by lessening styrofoam trashes and at the same time turn it into something useful. Recycling helps to keep Styrofoam out of the waste stream and therefore out of the landfill where it can sit for more than a hundred years. The recycling of polystyrene is not for cost benefits it’s for the benefit of our environment.
Background:
Styrofoam® is polystyrene, but most know it by its brand name: Styrofoam. This plastic material is used for food and drink containers, packing materials, and other items. Disposable Styrofoam packaging materials, take-out containers and cups take up considerable space in landfills and never break down. While Earth-friendly alternatives are readily available, it is difficult to completely avoid Styrofoam products entirely.
Polystyrene, made from petroleum, has been linked to cancer in humans. It's also bad for the environment because it takes a very long time to break down. Many communities have banned the use of Styrofoam. Until it is not totally banned, it may be beneficial to know how to recycle Styrofoam. Instead of throwing away your Styrofoam trashes, you can recycle it into styroglue. It is an alternative for commercial glue.
Objective:
This study aims to find alternative for commercial glue and at the same time to lessen the styrofoam trashes in our surroundings. This further addressed the following questions.
1. Does Styrofoam be recycled into styroglue?
2. How are Styroglue made?
3. Is it useful in making projects and crafts?
4. Is it really adhesive?
Significance:
Recent scientific studies reveal that human activities have contributed significantly to the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that cause climate change, one of which is mismanagement of wastes. This science investigatory project may lighten waste mismanagement in their own community in simple way, and at the same time have something useful from it.
Methodology:
a. Materials needed
Styrofoam, gasoline, stainless container, stick, mask
b. Preparation:
Once you have your items together, find a well-ventilated area or go outside.
Pour enough amount of gasoline into the container. Dip the Styrofoam to gasoline until it completely dissolves.
b. Procedure
The dissolved substance was applied to folder.

The researchers found out that a mixture of Styrofoam and gasoline is not only used as roof sealant, it can also be used as glue as substitute for commercial glues, which can be used as adhesive in posting pictures, making projects, and crafts.
Conclusions and Recommendations
We conclude that we recycle styrofoam into styroglue. By recycling it, we help to lessen trashes that harm the environment and at the same time it can be used as substitute for commercial glue/stick glue. A simple act of recycling can make a difference.
