Introduction
HDI: The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of human development. It measures the average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life (health), access to knowledge (education) and a decent standard of living (income). Data availability determines HDI country coverage. To enable cross-country comparisons, the HDI is, to the extent possible, calculated based on data from leading international data agencies and other credible data sources available at the time of writing.

Developed countries have the means to sustain the country’s economy which ultimately affects the life of citizens. More means of survival can be introduced to citizens and sustainability can be granted, thus increasing the life expectancy of citizens which will contribute to population growth. Less developed countries have lower life expectancies because their citizens have limited means of survival. Therefore, the HDI of a country reflects the type/shape of the population pyramid made for a…

India functions on a democratic system, which heavily influences the political situation of the country. However, this democracy stems from a caste system. A caste system is a social grouping that combines a group of particular members based on specific professions and usually leads to the isolation of each individual caste. The Indian people adopted the caste system to create an easy differentiation of communities and neighborhoods. Recently in India there has been a relaxing of the caste system depending on the part of India in which you are looking. In the cities you will see more of an intermingling and mix of the higher caste systems but as you explore the rural areas, you find a traditional form of the caste system. In recent years India has become the largest democracy in the world. The economy is highly affected by the political situation in India. The country suffers from high unemployment and poverty as two of its main issues that currently influence the economic standing of the country. With two opposing parties with vastly different views for the vision of the economy the country is found being pulled for a free market economy and an economy that strongly opposes globalization and favors a “land-for-all” attitude. (“Politics of India”) In India the legal situation highly resembles a common law model that is found in England today but is clout with Indian culture. In the courts India has a judge that acts as a neutral party that enforces the law fairly amongst each party. The government too has three branches: the executive, the judiciary and the legislative. The courts hold a common theme of carrying out justice to the people. (Srikrishna)…

Although both GDP and HDI measure the standard of living in a nation through one statistic, GDP is less comprehensive than HDI, making it not reflect societal well-being as all-rounded as HDI. GDP show total income of a country, indicating that only economic growth is taken into consideration. However, through means and expected years of schooling, life expectancy at birth and gross national income per capital, HDI can cover three dimensions: education, health and living standard, making HDI serve as a reference for both social and economical development. As mentioned above, to rate the societal well-being of a country, we can not only base on the total money that country generate because economical growth is only one component contributing to the sustainability of a country, and what GDP reflects is just a small part of the “health condition” of that country. HDI clearly give a broader and more adequate picture of at what level in development that country stand, because three dimensions (education, health and living standard) HDI refers are all necessary components to make that country stay strong. Saying GDP is less comprehensive than HDI because GDP focus on the wealth in total, but HDI focus on people. Even in HDI, there is a component of income, but income per capital not total income of the whole country as GDP. HDI place focus on people, each citizen in the country with easy access to good education, health and income will maintain the strength of the country. It stay tuned with the definition of societal well-being in the 21st, meaning a developed society is where citizens are treated well. If we base on GDP, the US ranked first because this great nation has the largest total income. However, if we look to HDI 2011, US only ranked 4th, while the 1st place was Norway. Looking into the societal well-being of these 2 nations, there is less crime, less unemployment rate, less crisis in Norway, because people in Norway has more means and expected years of…

The HDI—human development index—is a summary composite index that measures a country's average achievements in three basic aspects of human development: longevity, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. The first Human Development Report introduced a new way of measuring development by combining indicators of life expectancy, educational attainment and income into a composite human development index, the HDI. The breakthrough for the HDI was the creation of a single statistic which was to serve as a frame of reference for both social and economic development. The HDI sets a minimum and a maximum for each dimension, called goalposts, and then shows where each country stands in relation to these goalposts, expressed as a value between 0 and 1.…
