Ch. 1 The Task of Theology:
1. What is Theology? Theology is the study of God as he reveals himself.
2. What are the two main purposes? The primary goal is to proclaim the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ faithfully. The secondary goal is to study and seek to understand God’s truth; we grow in our knowledge and understanding of him and his word.
3. What does Sola Scriptura mean? Sola Scriptura means “Scripture alone.
4. Know the differences between magisterial and ministerial. A magisterial use of reason places reason above the Scriptures, but a ministerial use of reason subjects the conclusions of reason to scriptural authority.
5. Know the differences between formal and material principle. The formal is concerned with the source of information and the means of making decisions, but the material is the core belief or most important teaching.
6. To whom does the work of inspiration belong? The Holy Spirit
7. For Christian theology, what is our number one source of information? The Bible

To understand the word canon, we must look at the words origin. According to Chadwick, “The Greek word kanon meant a ruler for measuring, and so, as a metaphor, any sort of rule or norm.
