Study Abroad
As an International Business and Management double major with a Spanish minor, the study abroad program in Granada is essential to my academic growth. The semester abroad is not only required for my major but also, the immersion in the country is the only way to fully learn and appreciate the Spanish language as well as the culture. The Spanish classes offered during the Granada semester abroad are required for my major and learning them in the center of the Spanish culture is the best experience a student could ever hope for. The semester in Granada would also greatly contribute to my personal growth. No other time in my life will I be able to move to another country for three months and completely experience life in another culture. This semester abroad will help me to not only understand the culture of the clients I will hopefully be doing business with in the future but also to appreciate my own culture much more. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, “those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own”. I believe that not only is this true of foreign languages, but also of foreign cultures. In order to understand your own culture, you must understand other cultures to see the vast differences and similarities. I believe this semester abroad is absolutely vital to my future success in my career as well as in my life. This semester in Granada would be nothing short of a life changing

I would take in consideration that this overseas assignment will be undesired by probably most workers of the company. However, this will have a negative outcome on who will get picked but it has to be done in favor for the company’s reputation. I will personally look at each individual case to sort out who does have a family with children and who doesn’t. The ones who do not have children and or wives/ husbands I will prefer because they got less to scarify but their work performance have to be satisfactory. I also will look for positive work attitude and ability to lead and if he or she understands the work they will have to perform and represents the policy of our company at best. I will treat everyone the same in this decision making process but I need to make a decision fits the company and not the individual at best. I will choose a worker that has the potential to be a manager and is a strong leader and well accepted in the group, who has to go to represent the company professionally and in a positive attitude. I will communicate and make a decision with him who he would like to take with him and match it with my ideas of who I think the company will need here at the home base. After the decision is made I will approach these individuals and tell them that they have been chosen for this assignment and that the company is relying on them to perform at their best. I will tell them why they need to go and that this is in best interest of the company. They will accept it if likeable or not.…

Studying abroad is the act of a student pursuing educational opportunities in a foreign country (Brown University, 2010). This method of education offers many benefits that are very important for students in the 21st century. By engaging oneself in another culture, one can get to know that culture first hand and understand the perceptions, beliefs and values that make that culture unique, as well as providing the opportunity to learn or enhance language skills through immersion. Study abroad also provides an awareness of one’s place in that country as well as that country’s place in the world, which is of the utmost importance with the prevalence of globalization.…

In the course Study Abroad: Learning Through Engagement, I was required to write a reentry report depicting how studying abroad changed me and my perspective on the world. In my report I made the claim that, “Studying abroad is an integral part of higher education.” According to Wayne C. Booth (et al) this claim, though vague, is a practical claim because it first addresses a problem, “caused by some condition in the world,” it contains an ‘undesirable consequence’, of that condition, and to avoid this problem, a call to action for my readers (53-54).…

My immigrant grandmother worked as a realtor, helping Spanish-speaking people navigate the complex process of finding and financing their first home in the United States. She inspired me to consider making the Spanish language and culture an important part of my career. I am majoring in finance with a specialization in international business/Spanish. Since the business college does not offer a program in Spain, and understanding the language and cultural aspects are crucial when doing business in any foreign country, I believe that this program would greatly benefit me in my career path. I feel very strongly that I will be able to relate my experiences in Santander to…

Studying abroad will increase my knowledge and appreciation of the Spanish language. I have been taking Spanish for seven years now and I am ready to take on my greatest challenge yet, to immerse myself in the Spanish culture by living in a Spanish speaking country. I am excited to live in Madrid, Spain for a semester with the hopes of reaching fluency in Spanish. My experience with learning Spanish has not always been easy. When I think about learning the language I think about the frustration I have felt when saying the wrong word for what feels like the thousandth time. I think about crying in my Spanish professor’s office at least once (maybe twice) while at K-State because I just couldn’t get it. I think about the long plateaus where it has felt like no improvement has been made. But after getting past the bumps in the road, I have found that learning Spanish is incredibly rewarding. I think about the joy I felt when I was able to successfully communicate with an Ecuadorian student on campus. I think about comforting a Mexican camper who was homesick while I was a counselor at Kanakuk. I think about the week I spent in Guatemala and how the people and the culture touched me in ways that I cannot begin to describe. Studying a foreign language takes time and patience, but it pays off tenfold.…

Problem solving and decision-making are important skills for business and life. Problem-solving often involves decision-making, and decision-making is especially important for management and leadership. There are processes and techniques to improve decision-making and the quality of decisions. Decision-making is more natural to certain personalities, so these people should focus more on improving the quality of their decisions. People that are less natural decision-makers are often able to make quality assessments, but then need to be more decisive in acting upon the assessments made. Problem-solving and decision-making are closely linked, and each requires creativity in identifying and developing options, for which the brainstorming technique is particularly useful. Good decision-making requires a mixture of skills: creative development and identification of options, clarity of judgments, firmness of decision, and effective implementation.…

Background: As part of your application for the Faculty of Arts Exchange Programme or the HKU Worldwide Exchange Programme (HKUWW) Study Abroad scholarship, you have to provide a 'Statement of Purpose' (Arts) or 'Study Plan' (HKUWW). These are short essays which, on the Hong Kong side, are drawn on as supporting material in the selection process and, on the side of your potential host university, used to assess your motivation and study objectives, but also your command of English. The 'Statement of Purpose/ Study Plan' is a specific genre and different from the academic essay you are familiar with. Hence it is important that you follow the below guidelines closely, to produce a piece of writing that will award you a study place and scholarship. 1) Faculty of Arts Statement of Purpose • 800 to 1,000 words in length: this gives you enough room to expand on individual points, but without babbling . • Needs to include the following points: a) your reasons for wanting to study at your preferred host institution; b) how this institution will help you achieve your study goals; c) how the knowledge and experience gained at your preferred host institution will impact and influence your plans for the future upon your return to HK; and d) a brief description of any extra-curricular activities of which you are/ have been in charge.…

Donald Medley, Homer Coker, and Robert Soar (1984) describe succinctly the modern history of formal teacher evaluation–that period from the turn of the twentieth century to about 1980. This history might be divided into three overlapping periods: (1) The Search for Great Teachers; (2) Inferring Teacher Quality from Student Learning; and (3) Examining Teaching Performance. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, teacher evaluation appears to be entering a new phase of disequilibrium; that is, a transition to a period of Evaluating Teaching as Professional Behavior.…

One day I was at home finishing my chores sometime early last school year. My parents went out for the day and I wasn’t expecting much to happen. Later that day I receive an email from my marine biology teacher stating that there is an internship for me to go to Washington State to expand my knowledge in marine biology field. With this internship I could also earn college credit. I notified my parents about it and in a monotone voice they said we’ll talk about it at dinner. Several minutes later I receive an email giving me an opportunity to go to Germany in a cultural exchange program. I was excited but I was worried that my parents would say no. The summer prior I took part in an internship with The Nature Conservancy. I notified my parents the same way I did before and in their same monotone voice they repeat themselves again and tell me that it will be discussed at dinner.…
