Students Should Start Later Essay
Do you know the feeling when you get good grades or win a game for your team? It gives you confidence and makes you feel proud that you’ve accomplished something. But with the later starting times you might have a struggle between grades and sports. With the later starting times it might be an obstacle to get to sports events or making it to any after school activity when you might have a school class at that time. Or the school sports will be releasing athletes later from practice because of the time taken off by starting school and dismissing students from school later. In my opinion I think that students shouldn't start later because of traffic with transportation and after school activities interfering.

Research has demonstrated that the normal teenager’s bedtime to fall asleep would be 11pm or later, because of this change in their internal clocks teens may be wide awake laying in bed even when they are extremely tired. (Wolfson & Carskadon, 1998). “Also research has proven that sleep deprivation has a major negative impact on organization and ability, so it makes sense for prepared and rested students and athletes perform better sports wise and academically” (NS Foundation). Nevertheless, students will be used to there normal sleeping pattern and will be able to perform quite well in school and sports, which will drop the crash rate percent (NS Foundation).

In conclusion, I think that middle and high schools shouldn’t start later, because of sports practices being dismissed later because of that school being dismissed later, transportation with car crashes and coming home late will be the main cause of the higher crash rate, and last but not least it will help students perform better both academically and sports wise if they were to stick to their normal sleeping patterns. And if when it comes to choosing between a missing a class for a sports event that was important or just staying in the class and miss an important sports event which one would you

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

“Sleep deprivation is the most common brain impairment,” a premier sleep scientist, William Dement said. Sleep deprivation is the condition of suffering from a lack of sleep. More than 90% of high school teens are sleep deprived due to the start time of school (Gregoire, 2015). School start times need to change to at least one hour later. Later start times would result in a dramatically better student health, performance, and attendance.…

While this is a concern to a lot of high schools and to a lot of athletes in high school, the schools that have implemented a later start time have seen few problems in after school activities (¨Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times¨). Schools will reschedule the practices, allow practice to run a little later than normal, and match times are changed to meet the student's needs (¨Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times¨). Students who get more sleep are more likely able to finish their homework early, allowing time for after school activities (¨Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start…

Have you ever woken up feeling groggy and not wanting to go to school or do anything at all? As a result, many students go to school late or do not academically progress and participate in class. According to the Scholastic Scope article “Should School Start Later?” by Justin O’Neil and the article “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning” by Mark Fischetti, many schools are considering starting school later to help students succeed academically. Students have more trouble concentrating in class because they are not getting enough sleep. Some students arrive at school later because they oversleep. To make sure that there is less tardiness and the academic growth increases, schools are looking…

There are many health benefits for a later start time. "Less than one third of U.S. students, however, are sleeping at least 8 hours on school nights and four hours out of five middle and high schools start their day before 8:30 a.m. A consensus has emerged among health experts that this is simply too early," (neatoday.org). This evidence proves that the school start times can change the health of students. "Drowsy driving increases for our newest drivers. Teens released in the early afternoon (sometimes well before 2 p.m!) have hours of unsupervised time until the typical adult work day ends. Sleep deprivation increases risk-taking behavior, substance abuse, and impedes judgment and decision-making…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

There was one thing everyone dreaded about Highschool, the start time. Waking up early to make sure you were ready for the day and being able to catch the bus. High School start times are the reason for so many teens not being able to graduate on time, students grades being low, and the reason for such a low attendance rate. The start time for High School needs to be pushed back later in the morning, this will help kids perform their best during school, make kids so they are present and will help to get more kids to graduate on time. The later start time for High School will truly benefit the students. Several schools have pushed their start time back and the students and schools have made great progression, students have a better chance of…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

If you were to get out of school for 4 pm and then have to go to a sports practice you probably wouldn't be getting home until around 6 pm. Also, it wouldn't just be inconvenient for the kids who do sports, it would also be an inconvenience for older kids who have to work after school, especially if they work later shifts that would cause them to get home late and not have as much time for homework or studying. But, let's say these kids got off of school earlier, they would have much more time before or after sports and work to get homework done, which is good because kids shouldn't stress about having time to get schoolwork done. Finally, it's less convenient for parents. If school starts early, parents could…

Late start school would modify the school schedule, putting much stress on the populace. Late start school is a bad idea because it interferes with after-school activities. First, late start school reduces practice time for sports because of how late school would get out. Receding practice time would give kids less exercise, and research says exercise helps you sleep better. Good sports teams get a ton of practice; practice makes perfect.…

I believe school should start later, studies have found that as we age from 6-17, our circadian rhythm changes, we are more of a morning person at the younger ages (6-10). We wake up early natural in those ages. From ages 10-14, our bodies naturally get to bed later and wake up later, that's why some schools have switched the start times of high school and elementary school. It's in the best interest for the students that the start times of high school and elementary schools to be switched. Other studies have concluded that overall academic performance increased when the start times have been pushed back a hour. The only real negative is that there is less time in the afternoon for schools to have sports and clubs. The reason I say…

More sleep would benefit the sports team since it will result in less injuries and there will still be enough hours in the day for practice, even if that means practice would be shorter. Also, later start times would most likely result in a lot of positive changes to the teaching techniques used at schools. Since school would start later, that would mean less time to complete homework after school. Teachers can either minimize the amount of homework given, or homework could be completed elsewhere. Students will still have enough time to do homework at home, on buses, in the mornings, or study…

Personally, as a high school student, I do not believe that waking up a half an hour later would help me feel well rested and ready to preform. For instance, if I stay up until 3:00 a.m. in order to study for a test, it would not matter if I would wake up at 6:00 a.m. or 6:30 a.m. because I would still be deprived of sleep. Additionally, if school started at a later time, it would most likely just prompt students to push boundaries even further and stay up later than they previously were. This method of thinking that a later start time would be beneficial does not solve the existing epidemic of sleep deprivation, but raises more…
