Students Should Have Later Start Time Essay
Every day I wake up at 7 am and sometimes my mom lets me sleep in, but most of the time I sleep in anyways. I stay up late either watching TV and sometimes while reading a book, and most of the time it is by accident. If my school had a later time then we would definitely get more sleep and be ready for the day ahead. People are arguing whether students should have a later start time or school. Students should have a later start time to school. There are multiple benefits to schools having a later start time, some are that students can get that time to get more sleep. Another one is that students can be more prepared for the day. Although having an earlier start time could be beneficial also. First, let's get into why students should have a …show more content…
In the text ¨Support for sleeping in? Half of the parents favor later school start times for teens¨ by Mental Health Weekly Digest it states. , ¨The AAP recommends that adolescents receive 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep each night.¨ This evidence is saying that teens and other children need more sleep. The reason this would support that a benefit of having later start times is students can get more sleep is because if teens need 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep most of them are not going to get that because they stay up later. There are also more factors to sleep deprivation than watching TV, a lot of students have a lot of homework which could force you to stay up late. Another piece of evidence to support that students having a later start time could give them more sleep is when in the article ¨Support for sleeping in? Half of parents favor later school start times for teens¨ Weekly states, ¨Lack of sleep has been linked to mental health problems, increased risk of motor vehicle accidents and a decline in school performance.¨ This is saying that lack of sleep can lead to multiple issues and could even cause serious injury. The reason this would support the claim that students should have a later start time because they can get more sleep is because lack of sleep can lead to

On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has affected their academic performance in a bad way (“Sleep Rocks”). Sleep deprivation impairs students’ ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information. Academic performances on students are low due to lack of sleep. Schools should start later so students would get more sleep at home and it would prevent them from sleeping in class, so the students would have more motivation and students’ academic grades would increase. Sleep is an important part to each and every person. It helps…
