Students need to learn creative thinking at schools Nowadays, many schools start to teach students creative thinking skills. Some people think that it is not good for students because students’ main task in the school is to learn knowledge from textbooks and get good scores of examinations instead of studying how to think creatively. However, this essay argues that this thought is negative and schools need to teach students creative thinking skills which are beneficial to student themselves, innovation and economic development. Firstly, student can derive some benefits from creative thinking skills. Students can live independently if they are taught creative thought. Browne (2010, para. 5) quotes De Bono’s words (no reference) that ‘teaching thinking gives youngsters the ability to take charge of their lives, the ability to make decisions, make choices and so on’. They can use the thinking skills that they have learned to solve the problem of their lives. Also, students can perform well in the exam when they are taught thinking skills. Students who participated in Case Program, which used thinking skills to teach students scientific knowledge, could get a good score in examinations (‘Thinking skills’ 2003). Students can study knowledge and solve their problems of study in a creative way. Therefore, students can get benefit from creative thinking skills. Next, creative thinking skills can lead to innovation. Many advanced technologies are based on creative thinking skills.
