“Students learn better in segregated classes”.

Single-sex education has been demonstrated as a more effective and efficient way of teaching students. Single-sex education is the practice of conducting education where male and female students attend separate classes. This practice began in the 19th century, where many cultures advocated it on the basis of tradition as well as religion. Many countries have introduced the system to many schools such as; United Kingdom, United States, Middle-East and Australia. Segregated classes result in; decreasing distractions, behavior issues and bias and also provides a unique learning style.

Students learn better in segregated classes as it decreases distractions in learning and reduces student behavior problems. Fewer interactions between boys and girls create this sense of less distraction which gradually results in decreasing of student behavior problems as they start learning and listening in class more. With students not having behavior issues this would make the teacher have an easier job teaching the students. The “Teacher College Record” published a study in 2009 that was inclusive of that in majority cases, the effect of the interaction between females and males has resulted in fewer amount of homework done, less enjoyment, lower reading and mathematics scores. 98% of teachers seen a decrease of student behavior problems and distractions when classes are “split”. Furthermore, single-sex education should be promoted, as it results in less distractions and positive behavior in all students.
By organizing and abiding by the single-sex education program it addresses unique learning styles and interest of boys and girls. By having this, there might be a decrease in teacher and student interactions being based on different sex. A teacher would educate his students in a way where they are enjoying it and at the same time fulfilling the demand of the syllabus. This therefore would encourage teachers to teach the females in a different way than teaching boys and vice versa, hence that’s the way students enjoy it the most. Also many teachers’ favourtise males over females or females over males, so by providing single-sex education there would be a decrease of bias opinion treatment.

However, to every positive there is a negative. Even though, single sex education is effective there is also some things that limit its effectiveness. Opponents of single sex education argue that it is not segregation of classes that is producing positive results with students but rather it is the motivation of the teacher and the resources that are available. Also, there is a lack of quality research in the field to attribute success to single-sex schooling rather than extraneous factors. They also believe that having single-sex schooling does not prepare the children to the real world where they will need to communicate with members of the opposite sex.

To conclude, segregating classes should be brought up in more countries and schools addressing its significance. This efficient and effective program of separating males and females results in more education in students and leads to better academic results. This is through decreasing of distractions, behavior problems, bias treatment and a new unique style of learning!
