Responsibility or Liability? Student Loan Debt and Time Use in College The article included in Social Forces combats the idea that student loans affect college students motivation and even completion. At first look this is a very generic idea, but this specific article delves even deeper. It explores the effects of debt on a student in their daily life and how the amalgamation of those days with debt can affect the shaping of the student’s entire life. In order to properly study debt in a college setting student’s lives are dissected and categorized into 3 lifestyles, they include: “Socially Engaged”, “Serious Students”, and the “Inactive Students”. The Socially engaged students indulge in active activities such as partying and athletic events while contrastly Inactive students tend to stray away from engaging activities. Serious students are similar to Inactive students in that they stray away from the engaging activities, but they fill that void with school work instead of inactivity. The findings of the research in relation to the three lifestyles in that indebted students tend to fall in either the Serious or Inactive student criteria. Because those who are indebted are more likely to fall under the categories of inactive or serious students, they miss much of the social aspect of college. College is important for education, but networking can go as far a degree and abstaining from social activity as a result of debt in this regard can prove to be hindering. Another aspect that could affect those in debt is the inability to get a prestigious degree from lack of funding. Though, on the other side of the coin a certain amount of responsibility is birthed from the students who are forced to pay their own
