College isn’t what it should be. Students nowadays are focused on having fun. They think college is a place of freedom where they can just do as they please and not care about their schooling, “Life is at parties, at clubs, in music, with friends, in sports” (Edmundson). Students have gained independence and feel like they must do crazy things. Or…

The definition of civil engagement that I like best is “Civic engagement is individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern” I think this definition is the best because it mentions the “individual” and the “collective” view. Some of the definitions on the reading consider as a civil engagement only when is collective or group activity and did not mention anything about individual activity. I believe even small things that one person do for the society is a civic engagement. It is not necessary to be part of a big group or big project to be responsible citizen.…

Teachers are underpaid, overworked, and given little respect and gratitude for the work that they do which can lead quickly to apathy and indifference in the quality of instruction their students receive. Students must try their best to stay motivated despite the seemingly inescapable obstacles presented to them by their teachers’ attitudes and curricula, school day procedures, and the lack of support from extended learning programs after school and during summer months due to government spending cutbacks. Students are also taught only one specific way to learn and to prove their academic growth, and this does not take into account any individual skills or merits outside of test taking abilities. American public school students in turn have become less motivated to participate in class, do their homework, or even attend school at all. The weathered and weak foundation of the traditional American public school system has become an even more perilous danger to our youth as more time goes on, and many students are not lucky enough to escape falling through the cracks that our system we so desperately cling to has…

The hardest thing for college students is waking up in time for class so you won't sleep in. For example if you have a class at 8 you can't stay up to one u have to go to bed earlier and set your alarm to wake up in time. Also when you first wake up don't go on your phone or you will be late for sure. Getting a lot of homework is stressful to do all of it especially if its due the next day. For example if you get like 100 pages of work and its due tomorrow it is not healthy for an adult to do that much and its stressful to finish it in that time.…

Normally college freshman are taking courses that aren’t focused on their major. Most freshman feel that these courses are really boring and a waste of time. Right now I am struggling in my history class because it is something I am not interested in. It is important for college students to be motivated in their work. “The students who succeed will need to be self-motivated.”(“Breakthrough Learning”). I believe freshman have trouble getting up, going to class, studying, and making deadlines because aren’t motivated. Personally there are times I struggle because there is no one to remind to study or work on assignments. I now have the freedom to do my own thing in college. College freshman are also far away from the finish line, so they aren’t as motivated as seniors. Because their vision of graduation is so blurry, freshman will more likely go left than right. If college freshman don’t change, they could possibly fail or even drop out. According to nurse practioner, Sandra Halburner says, “Although, if you do begin to notice that your quality of life is starting to crumble-such as lower grades or sleep loss-that’s a huge sign to that it’s time to make a change.”(Halburner). It’s safe to assume that if a student doesn’t prepare themselves for the next exam or finish their assignments, they will receive failing grades. And continuing making those unsatisfactory grades, college freshmen will…

Attending the student involvement fair was a great experience. On the surface, the fair’s main purpose was to provide an outlet for students to engage in on campus activities that may strike their interest; however, I found it to be much more powerful than that. This involvement fair was not only a way to showcase Penn State and its nearly 900 clubs, but also a way to draw from each student interests and talents that may have been unknown to them. After attending the fair and meeting a several different organizations, I know that I have become a part of something bigger, and will be able to have experiences and be provided opportunities like no other.…

The constant drilling and repetitiveness in class can often cause kids to grow bored and gain a disinterest in school related matters. In Source A it says " student engagement is potentially stifled in the current education model that emphasizes high-stakes testing and accountability systems in urban schools" (Cavendish). "As decreased student engagement is related to a decreased likelihood of graduation and consequently severely limited postsecondary education and employment opportunities" (National Research Council, 2004). It is important for children to maintain an interest in their education. Not only does the current curriculum cause a boredom amongst students in school's according to Sir Ken Robinson, in Slon's (2013) article, "by the time they get to be adults most kids have lost the capacity" to be creative due to the fact that experimentation and creation are not a fundamental part of the standardized testing mechanisms.…
