(ASBEC) suggests that the building sector is directly responsible for around 24% of the total energy use. At present this is split fairly evenly between the residential and commercial building sectors. Reducing energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are both worthwhile goals as it saves money and saves the environment. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been presented with increasing urgency within recent years as it is driving climate change. There are many opportunities to reduce energy and emissions within the building sector.…

There are always going to be challenges in teams but having a plan that will effectively address the challenges will help to mediate the severity of the challenges. If challenges are left alone and not addressed they can lead to team conflicts, misunderstandings, arguments, poor performance, project failures, resentment, and loss of motivation. As a team it is in its best interest to clearly set guidelines that will mitigate problems and reduce the risk of challenges the team may face. Before the team can set guidelines that address challenges that the majority of teams face the team must clearly define challenges that may lead to bigger problems within the team.…

Cyberspace is clearly the buzzword of the day. As the Air Force moves forward with its vision to fly and fight in cyberspace, however, there are some emerging misperceptions about what warfighting in this new domain actually means. Depending on how you define or interpret cyberspace determines what you think warfighting in the domain will look like. Rather than engage in a debate on how we should define cyberspace, this article uses the definition of cyberspace recently adopted by the Department of Defense and the Air Force to address two common misperceptions about cyber warfare. The Department of Defense officially codified its understanding of cyberspace as a warfighting domain with the publication of the National Military Strategy for Cyberspace Operations. HYPERLINK http//www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/wrightstuff/cyberspace_defined_wrightstuff_17may07.htm l _ftn1_ftn1 o In this document, cyberspace is defined as a domain characterized by the use of electronics and the electromagnetic spectrum to store, modify, and exchange data via networked systems and associated physical infrastructures. According to this definition, cyberspace is a very real, physical domain that is comprised of electronics and networked systems that use electromagnetic energy. Cyberspace exists across the other domains of air, land, sea, and space and connects these physical domains with the cognitive processes that use the data that is stored, modified, or exchanged. Cyberspace is therefore distinct from the information that may be resident in or transferred through the domain. Using this understanding of cyberspace, the following sections discuss misperceptions about the boundaries of the domain and operations conducted in the domain. There is a wide range of thoughts about the extent of cyberspace or what should be included in cyber warfare. A typical response to What is cyberspace usually involves some description of computer networks or the internet. For the more network savvy,…

In building construction and in fire prevention there are organizations that have created a useful system on how to determine what type of building falls under which category. The ICC (International Code Council) and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) create these building codes for the safety of firefighters. The two most commonly known standards for building classifications are the NFPA 5000 and also the International Building Code (IBC). The two are very similar, however, they different on sub-categorizing. The International Building Code uses Roman numerals behind the type of construction. In addition to subcategories with letters for each five classes and the amount of fire resistance provided for each building. NFPA uses Roman numerals behind the type of construction. Unlike the IBC, NFPA uses a 3-digit number system behind that to sub categorize the fire hourly rating for the load-bearing walls, for the beams and columns, and for the floor construction. The IBC and NFPA breaks down construction in to five classes, Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V.…

The impact of hazards can be reduced by incorporating earthquake resistant or ‘aseismic’ design features. Buildings made of mud brick (adobe) or other materials without reinforcement will collapse easily during an earthquake. In multi storey buildings the shaking can be increased with height as the building moves. Techniques and regulations are constantly being updated and improved. However some buildings may not be as safe as once thought. Examples of aseismic deign includes a large concrete weight on top of a building activated by computer controlled dampers which moves in the opposite direction to the force of the earthquake to counteract stress in the structure. Total power failures means the block can’t be moved. Large rubber shock absorbers can be planted into the foundations to allow the building to rock back and forth without causing too much damage to the structure. By adding eccentric cross-bracings to a structure the building becomes more ductile and can respond to pressures from earthquakes, minimising damage. An aseismic design is less likely to collapse on its occupants-it doesn’t mean that the structure is not damaged beyond repair. Economic losses therefore remain high ans continue to rise as more expensive techniques are used when rebuilding.…

Concrete is widely used in constructing buildings, houses and other structures, but in order to have a strong structure there are factors to be considered. One of which is compressive strength, this is important to the structure especially if it is a high rise building and will be used commercially. The compressive strength of a concrete is important especially to the column of a structure because it resists compression force. Columns must have sufficient compressive strength to carry loads acting upon it.…
