Strengths Based Team Workshop Paper

On September 8, my Career Leadership Academy Class was asked to attend a team workshop where we would not only work on our own leadership skills, but we would put them to use in group work. This workshop focused on the understanding of group roles and behaviors needed for effective teamwork. The workshop involved a series of group activities where we learned to demonstrate all of our personal strengths as well as performing with along with others. As a group we were expected to use the relational leadership stages of group development given to us by our professionalism book in chapter 5. The text book suggest using the following techniques when working

However, I did feel as though ability played a role in leadership. I felt as though depending on the activity we were doing others had more confidence in what we were to accomplish so they took a larger leadership role than others. For example, when we did the hula hoop activity a group member had already done the activity, so we took her advice in how we should accomplish the task. Her advice was that we go slowly and use two fingers which worked better than when we did it as a big group.
During the team building experiment with the tubeez, Hanna took charge and in a kind way declared herself leader and she tried to distribute roles and set a plan for this experiment. There were also some members who felt they had more experience or knowledge on how to accomplish the building task involving the tubeez so they established their role and they stepped up and took the first few building roles. As a team we tried to talk about how to go about building the structure but with limited time we were rushed and opinions kind of seemed to start

When someone wanted something else we talked about it and gave sides and opinions and eventually agreed on one that best suited the group. I had lots of opinions but then I gave my opinion I made sure to provided examples on why we should go in a different direction.
When we had a group controversy we handled it by listening to others then using the process of elimination or by voting on it. Although, we had a few stubborn people that really wanted their idea rather than others. I think most of the team was more lenient in going along just to avoid controversy so others gave in order to accomplish the task.
I did not like how we really didn’t get a say in the group decision it was more compromise than actual decision mainly because we did not have enough time to really plan it out. But it was nice that we could all put or differences aside and come to a

We met every Monday and Wednesday morning. We each had a specific area that we specialized in but the final decisions were always made as a team. The collaboration of having all of the different ideas from different point of views to make the decision benefited us greatly. We started off being very guarded towards one another but by the end that all went away and we each let it known what we wanted done. Team Andrews was composed of both introverts and extroverts which created a well balanced team. We had some people that were ready and willing to take the most risks and then we had people that were more cautious. So compromise was key to the success of our team's prosperity. We went in head first with our strategy and never looked back. If we were working in the real world as a group, we think that we would be successful as…

I felt comfortable with a verbal plan because everyone did what they said. Next time I think a written plan would have been a better option, in case someone didn’t do their part. The team’s time could have also been better used by staying more focused. We could have told friends that came by we were working on a project, and can’t talk right now. We could have also got multiple sizes of all our materials. This would have allowed us to continuously work on our prototype, instead of waiting for new materials. Lastly, we should have booked a room in the ILC instead of using the common studio space. This would have limited outside distractions, since no other group would be working in the same…

The original stage of team building is the forming stage. In this stage our group was not exactly sure what this project would entail and what work was ahead of us. We were all polite and on our best behavior making contact with the rest of the group. There was a positive and high expectation that we would be successful and develop an outstanding service learning project. In this stage our roles were not clearly defined. This lead to us mostly working independently and gaining an understanding for the project and what to expect for ourselves.…

My team consisted of six members. We started our discussion by taking a poll. We were split equally between Kristin and Suzanne. Since nobody supported Nancy, we dropped her profile from our discussion. Then, the two sides tried to convince each other with their choice. We both performed a reaction known as the commitment and consistency principle, which explains that “a person who takes a stand encounters pressures to behave consistently with that commitment”.…

The hardest part of being a group leader is to maintain team harmony. Here I played a role as tester of agreements and feeling expresser. With the differences of individual presentation, disagreements of certain terms always exist in the preparation of group presentation. At the first time meeting, our team tried to brainstorm any ideas of our topic, including North Korea Weapon Issues, Teenager Dating, Internet Privacy, Japanese Cartoons’ Influences to Teenagers, etc. Our group members’ debates therefore revolved around deciding project topic. I came up with an idea that vote might be the best way to reach a consensus. Moreover, Julia and Nicole once argued about the meaning of hacking and phishing for the whole meeting. It was my responsible to stop them but I could not. Thus, I had to end our meeting. When I came back home, I texted massage to both of them. “What I know is that the right meaning of a single word won’t help us to get good grade for this group project, but the strong group cohesion will lead a team to the right direction.” Fortunately, they all took my advice and cooperate well on the rest of our group meeting.…

In the future when I become a licensed counselor I may be asked to lead a counseling group, therefore, it is very important for me to gain as much experience or knowledge on the techniques and strategies which will enable me to be a good and efficient group leader. To help me accomplish this I was asked to observe a group meeting of interest and to learn from my observations. I was to be on the lookout for interaction, behaviors which I felt supported effective group work and interactions, behaviors that hindered effective group work, the group leader’s leadership style, if I would do anything different if I was the group leader, something that resonated with me and finally, how I would use what I observed later when on in my…

In our group for this assignment we used a few techniques to arrive at a combined agreement. Group Polarization was definitely present in this group, so was dictatorship and conformity. The group worked together verbally; since a face to face was not applicable. Moscovici & Zavalloni describe group polarization as a “tendency for a group discussion to amplify the inclinations of group members.” (Moscovici, S., & Zavalloni, M., 1969).…

In this task, there was a Primary Leader and a Secondary Leader who were Iratu and me (Pooja) respectively. While Iratu approached the activity with a Laissez-faire leadership style, I approached it with a Democratic leadership style. Having two leaders with different leadership styles complimented the effectiveness of the group as there were best of both worlds. Iratu’s leadership gave every member in the group time to process each question and therefore left no strain upon any member. My leadership ensured that every member had equal participation in the group and their opinions were voiced. The two leaders worked concertedly; I collected everyone’s views and analysed them making it easier for Iratu to make an ultimate decision. Due to this collaboration, a decision was made easily…
