Strength of Presidency
Over time people have come to believe that the U.S. Presidency has become too strong and that the president is taking power from other parts of the government, which puts our democratic system in danger. The United States Constitution is supposed to keep the president from doing wrong and Article Two is to put limits on what the President can or cannot do.
The Constitution was written over 250 years ago and most of the rules written do not apply to Presidents today. There is a lot of issues and laws that the President has to deal with now a days then one hundred years ago. Now the United States is very rich and powerful nation, it has many nuclear bombs and missiles. The Constitution does not even apply to what the president has to deal with today. If you asked a president prior to the last hundred years, they would be in total surprise to hear what the president has to deal with and is in charge of today. They could never picture going to a country and destroy it with nuclear weapons and bombs. For example the President is in charge of many important military items. For starters the military has thousands of more soldiers then before, the president has the power to set destruction of cities can give the signal to launch missiles and bombs.
Over time there have been many different types of presidents, but there are two main types. The two main types of presidents are the ones that think they didn’t have enough power but yet did not do more than the Constitution said. They believed the Constitution limited what they could and could not do. The other was those who believe the Constitution gave enough power to be a strong president, but they should not just stop there and they should do a little more. Over the years presidential problems and issues have grown and they may need a little more power. There is many pros and cons that come along with have a growth in power for Presidents though.
Some time we treat our president like if they were royal. Think about it the president lives in a big mansion called the white house and has people who works for him like servants. The president is even protected by police and the secret service in fear of him being killed or attacked. It is rare people have a face to face or one on one with the President of the United States. When the constitution was written it was to keep a fair balance between the president and the congress, but now today the president has more power than the congress and the congress is pretty much giving it to the president. For example, the power to declare war. The Constitution state that power is for only Congress, yet presidents have been fighting and starting wars without Congress declaring a war. Such as the Vietnam War, Congress had never given the ok to declare war but yet the President has troops sent out there to fight war. This already is allowing the president to get and gain way too much power which would aim against strong Presidential power.
Yet some people believe in the president should not have too much power, the president needs to be strong and powerful in some ways. In case of a national emergency the president needs to be able to act quick and fast. There is no time for congress to sit and talk out the problem, we need a fast response to either start war or to declare peace. The president is elected by the people of the United States to run the country and be a leader. If president gains too much power the United States could always be changed in four years or even voted out of office.
As of today the president does not have a lot of power. The president still follows under congress. Obama could do a lot of things he would like without congress. For example with “Obama Care” being a big issue, it could have been passed and done for without congress. Congress is allowing the people to give a say and still working on the perks of the United States health care. Other issues such as the bomb threat of Korea. Obama did not have the power to just say “we are going to war”. It has to go through congress and then Obama could declare or reject war. The president does not have too much power as of today but once it starts to look like a democracy then the United States should be worried.
The president should be weaken by office. The president should not have too much power. If we start to give the president too much power it could change the way of the United States. Some believe that the president is voted and is the right choice and would not abuse their power. Yet being under so much pressure and having so many problem the president could do pretty much whatever they please.
