Street Furniture
Context
I was commissioned to create a piece of street furniture for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. My fountain design, called ‘My Cup Spilleth Over’, represents East meeting West, which reflects the Brisbane’s social demographic and cultural fusion. The fountain features a ‘U’ shaped arc which cascades water down a series of large assembled Chinese teacups. These cups are hand painted in red and green, as these colours traditionally symbolise good luck in Asian culture.

Planning

1.1 Aspect 1 - Defining the problem

1.1.1 Mind Map

1.1.2 Defining the problem
The fountain I designed as street furniture for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village has some potential problems that will need to be solved.

One problem is selecting an ideal location for the fountain. This particular design requires a level ground and sufficient space for the height of the fountain. An ideal location would be a park, such as Maccaskie Park, in Kelvin Grove.

Another potential problem is maintaining the look and finish of the stone so that it always looks polished. A clear weatherproof lacquer could be applied every year to ensure the fountain always looks visually appealing.

The fountain design is aesthetically appealing but may be vandalised. The Chinese cups may be chipped or broken if hit with a hammer or metal bat. To avoid this from occurring, the cups will be constructed out of thick concrete and secured to the steel rod by steel collars, which attach to the lip of the cups/bowls.

The water pump and filtration may present an issue down the track because the u-shaped sandstone structure has a copper water pipe inserted inside it to allow the water to circulate. The water runs up the u-shape structure and cascades down over the Chinese cups/bowls and back into the base. If maintenance is required on the water pipes, the sandstone blocks will need to be detached and the copper pipe/s extracted.

Another potential problem may be that people choose to tamper

In order to remain a successful company, Palliser needs to assess their current strategies and evoke on new ideas to compete in a economy that maximizes on cost. Several alternatives are available to Palliser, including: Opening more factories in Mexico and sell the products in North America, Opening factories in an Asian country and sell the products to the Asian market or Initiate a joint venture with an Asian company and sell the products to North America. It is recommended that Palliser opens factories in an Asian country and sell the products to the Asian market. I would switch from a standard asphalt based lot to something more porous. My research did not yield much in results but a standard old fashioned Gravel lot would allow water to seep in to the ground as it normally would while passing through not chemically treated stone that are not harmful to the environment. This is an idea I would create a research and development team for and I would help pioneer a new way to park that would be safe for the city and would improve the quality of life for the patrons living near my stores. I would also create a specific area that was shielded from the rain for my pawn products as not to deposit any harmful chemicals in to the ground that would affect the drinking water.…

In 1944, A.A.DeFehr began creating household furniture from his woodworking shop in the basement of his home. This solo operation soon turned into a booming business with expansion opportunities, but also encountered challenges along the way. In 1964, this one man business, turned into DeFehr Manufacturing Ltd (DML), consisting of 50 employees working out of a 45,000 square foot building. The firm’s sales and annual revenue continued to grow between the 1960’s – 1970’s, with 20% of the sales coming from exports to the United States (U.S.). However, in 1975 they had to withdraw from exporting to the US due to the rising Canadian (CDN): US ratio.…

Memorial Splash Park has gone through the early planning stages. It is now time to take what the committee has composed on paper, and turn it into a reality. The planning stages has taken a total of three months to accurately address timing, sitting/sizing, cost, potential funding, and community research for the park. Once those issues were calculated and discussed, then the additional issues of which park elements will be used, security, and maintenance of the splash park was addressed. The proposal of Memorial Splash Park has been presented to the board, as well as all research in regards to cost, sitting, sizing, funding options, equipment/labor needed, security, maintenance, and community surveys. The proposal was voted 6 to 1 in favor of construction of Memorial Splash Park. I, and the committee, have to decide to break ground September 4th, 2012 and complete construction exactly four months from the date. A brief, but detailed, account will be given as to the steps taken over the four months to get the park up and running.…

And if ApplPoly had done idea evaluation before jumping into the next step, perhaps they will have a clear idea of how to modify or push out a better suited product for the public. The reactions from the leading architects were discouraging according to the textbook[4], it may be best to kill the idea at this point. Since Preston’s idea just have some flaws according to the architects’ reaction, so we think the idea should be revised according to points the architects mentioned- it is not against fires and not suitable for recreational facilities, and managers should decide that the new-product developing process…

Heidelberg Street is part of the east side of Detroit (a.k.a. poor inner city downtown). When one starts to walk down this street, they will see an array of bright colours. To a person who has no sense of art, Heidelberg Street may look as if someone painted a bunch of garbage and dispersed it along this intriguing piece of land. Polka dots and numbers are placed all over the abandoned buildings (Fig. 3) and toys are hanging off the near by trees. Many people around the world come to Detroit to see this controversial work of art (“Heidelberg Project, Detroit).…

The Idea of a sculpture or other public art form for Front Street in Yakima Washington came from the plan of restoration of the historical district in 2004. When the original plans fell through the city council made the decision to place a donated sculpture “the Convolution” in front of a locally owned restaurant The Depot owned by Karl Pasten. Pasten became outraged by the notion of modern art being placed into a historical district stating “…to me it looks like three-dimensional graffiti." A long seven month debate arose from the disagreement on placing the sculpture. The sculpture eventually placed in its original location bringing joy and interest to some and defeat to others but not before creating a new pathway for public art.…

The City of Jacksonville was determined to keep such a memorable part of the cities history and with the help of the Mayor John Peyton and the City Council, a restoration plan was set forward in March of 2010. Restoration was completed with about $3.2 million in funds, and resulting in 5 months of closure (“Friendship Fountain Grand Reopening”). Broken concrete areas were replaced around the fountain with natural grass surfaces, seating opportunities were added, new sidewalks installed, as well as instillation of additional lights and trees. In addition, the project included refurbishment of the infrastructure of the fountain itself; specifically including the pipes, pumps, and electrical systems, in an attempt to restore it’s iconic…
