Storyteller Analysis
The story I chose to read in the novel Storyteller, is Tony’s Story. The story is about two indian men. One of the men, Leon has just returned from the war and the other Tony has stayed on the reservation his whole life. Tony meets up with Leon at a festival where a state cop beats Leon up for no apparent reason. That night, Tony has a dream that reveals to him the cop is actually a witch. A couple days later the two men go to a gas station where Tony sees the cop again. The cop follows them and pulls them over, for no reason. Some time later, Leon and Tony go to a sheep camp together and on the way there the cop pulls them over again. At this point Tony is so convinced the cop is a witch, he takes Leon’s gun and shoots him. Leon does …show more content…
Coming back from the war changed Leon culturally and mentally as seen from the quote by Tony, “ I wondered why men who came back from the army were troublemakers on the reservation.(117)” Even Tony’s father believed that Leon had changed from the war. “Leon goes looking for trouble-I wish you wouldn’t hang around with him.(119)” I believe that the trouble Tony and his father mention is just a lack of culture for Leon. The war has shown Leon terrible things and has possibly given him some type of PTSD causing Leon to have trouble to believe in his traditional culture again. “I reached in my pocket for the arrowhead on the piece of string...Here, wear it around your neck-like mine. See? Just in case,” I said, “for protection.” “You don’t believe in that, do you?(119)” Tony is trying to give Leon an arrowhead for protection against the cop/witch, but Leon has a hard time believing in his culture so he turns it down. Hopefully, with time Leon will be able to put aside the terrible events of the war, and once again regain his …show more content…
Culture is the rules by which a group of people live and how they are supposed to act. Creating a sense of self is heavily based on a person’s culture. When a person loses their culture or it is taken away from them, their identity is also. That person has gone their whole life believing a set of rules to have it suddenly ripped from them. This causes an identity crisis until the person is again able to find himself. Leon’s culture was ripped away from him because of the war. He also goes through an identity crisis and tries to find himself, which is why he is such a troublemaker now that he is back on the reservation. Hopefully the incident of the cop/witch is enough for Leon to once again regain his culture live his life like

Ben Hall and Maguire may have divided the property and operated independently of each other, as in John McGuire's narrative, 'The Biography of a Reliable Old Native', Maguire states that Ben Hall reputedly named his portion 'Cubbine Bin', running his own cattle and horses, and when required the two men worked together in clearing and forming stockyards close to their water supply, this would have been a prudent way to operate a new farming enterprise in the 1860’s, and thus the two squatters shared the yearly rent to the government, as for the acquiring of stock for this new enterprise, John Maguire states that Ben Hall and himself had done a bit of duffing, Maguire…

Heinrichs states," when you want to change someone's mood, tell a story."( Heinrichs 83). Storytelling is in an invaluable argument tool which uses pathos to convince an audience. The best way to appeal to another person's pathos is to create a story which makes the audience feel as if they have experienced it for themselves. This method of storytelling is much more convincing to someone else opposed to the typical second hand storytelling we know today. When trying to alter or influence someone else's pathos, name calling and other stereotypical methods pale in comparison because the human mind responds better to stories recounted from the first-person point of view rather than second hand . " the more the story the more it seems like a…

Every morning, she drank a big cup of goldenrod tea, claiming that she didn't need any other medicine. One day, when Leona was walking back home, she saw lots of people on a vacant lot, planting on their own little gardens. However, there was too much trash, so she decided to call the government to take care of all the garbage. After a few days being passed from line to line, she decided to take a bus downtown and walk into the Public Health Department. Olsen’s third chapter “Don’t Be Such a Poor Storyteller” (Olsen, 81) is one of his most powerful chapters where he dives deep into the heart of his suggestions. Good mass communicators are good storytellers. They tell a compelling story that allows the members of the audience to share in their experience and share their passion. Olsen begins this chapter like he does every other chapter with a personal story. This one is a hilarious story of Olsen and a girlfriend of his from the past. In the story he talks about how his girlfriend used to criticize him for telling boring stories. This is not a unique phenomenon. Scientist for decades have been criticized for their inability to tell a story to connect with a mass audience. In this chapter he…

I was born on March 26, 2001. I was delivered by Dr. Deborah in Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa. After a lot of debate, my father gave me the name Jashawn. None of the of the family on my mom’s side liked my name. My father probably got the idea of Jashawn from one of my older cousins, who has the name Dashawn. Later on, his cousin named her son Tyshawn, and I also have a cousin named Kashawn. So, as you can tell, my dad and his family are very original. My mom left my dad, who was an abusive drug addict, constantly in and out of jail. I never really had a particular home that I grew up in, because my mom was always finding houses that she liked better than the house we were in at the moment. My most prominent memories came from an apartment downtown, a block or so from the police department.…
