Stolpestad by William Lychack

Stolpestad is a short story written by William Lychack, published in 2008, is about a policeman who gets called out at the end of his shift, to help a 9 year old boy with his suffering dog. Stolpestad is the main character in the story and the protagonist. He is not at all captivated by the task at hand, which I believe to be the antagonist of the story, but follows his orders and heads out to accomplish this odd task and shoots the dog. In the end he is confronted by the young boy and his father for not actually killing the dog.
We are first greeted with a very explicit description of the day itself. “Sun never breaking through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain - the odometer like a clock ticking all these bored little pent-up streets and mills and tenants away.” (Page 1, line 2-4) This description suggests that it is always like this, the town never changing, never moving on, constant and a duplicate of the day before, just as the life of Stolpestad. Every street, every shop and home the same as they were in his childhood memories. He has always lived here, but his portrayal of the town bares little enthusiasm or fondness, almost suggesting a negative outlook on his life. The ambience of the setting continues on the same dull note, when the area in which the dog is located is presented. “..the grass and scrub weeds, the sumac, the old tires, empty bottles, paint cans, rusted car axel, refrigerator door.” (Page 1, line 24-25) The setting reflects somewhat on the mood of the character, including the cloudy summer day, this hints towards the characters despondency, both towards the situation and possibly his life. Because the setting is sketched in quite a vivid manor, we are led to assume it has great importance to both the story and the main character. Stolpestad obviously sees little to no excitement in his life, which is portrayed in the setting and hints towards the two coinciding with each other.
“as if you’ve seen or imagined or been through all of this or will be through it all again, over and over” (Page 3, line 103-104) This line also portrays the theme of him living the same life day in and day out, not moving on with your life, or even not developing on life’s aspect. This I see as a possible main demeanour of the story.
Throughout the story Stolpestad may be perceived as a round, yet static character remaining somewhat untouched by the on going events, this however changes at the very end of the story, when the boy and his father leaves and Stolpestad seems to diminish and become one with his surroundings. This is suggested in the line: “away until you’re gone at the edge of the woods, a piece of dark within the dark, Sheila arriving to that front door, eventually, this woman calling for something to come in out of the night.” (Page 5, line 162-164)
The author doesn’t convey the characters by telling, but rather allowing the characters to show their personalities, thus giving the reader room to interoperate their own views on the characters.
The story is told using first person, limited omniscient narration, this making the story subjective, we live out the story as if we are Stolpestad, creating a sense of irony. I also believe there is a form of interior monologue, due to the lack of punctuation, the sentences, especially during a description, seems to continue, with no displayed end to the sentence. The disjointed nature of interior monologue doesn’t give a direct interpretation, which allows the reader to play with their own feelings.
There is an implied theme to this story, which is hidden in the action, characters, setting and language of the story. In a symbolic sense, the task at hand, killing the suffering dog, could be interoperated as Stolpestads life in this town, he is suffering in his dismal, tediously boring life. He failed to shoot the dog properly, because he didn’t wish to cause the boy any more despair than necessary, this possibly meaning he wants to find a subtle way of letting his family know he is displeased with his current life. The fact that he fails to do so, shows that he hasn’t the strength to fulfil the task at hand, and therefore failing to accomplish the feeling of fulfilment in his life.

The setting of this story takes place on the planet Prelandra, also known as Venus. This planet consists of many floating islands. The islands are quite beautiful, the clouds are purple and the sky is a golden color, the seawater is green and drinkable, from the distance the water looks like glided glass. The islands are not very stable, and they can shake if water hits the mobile islands. All of the islands are mobile, except the main island, which remains stationary. Maledil, the people's god, forbade them to spend the night on the main island; therefore the inhabitants of Perelandra stay on one of the mobile islands. There are many different types of inhabitants on Perelandra, dragons, exotic fish, possums, and unusual looking birds. Ransom, the books main character, mistook the birds for bat-winged reptiles when he first arrived on Perelandra. Life is a lesson built up of the experiences one encounters and the challenges they face. One begins as a newborn and from the moment of reasonable understanding their life is what they make it to be. In order for one to grow one must experience life as the days flow forward, so not to place themselves in another's shoes and miss an experience because of it. There is a reason why people organize others in "age groups": so that they will grow together through the examples each one sets. Expecting to grow properly and learn what one must when put in an unfamiliar generation, is as if trying to teach a person to walk through the example of a whale-both are mammals but are impossible to compare. This is evident in Bernhard Schlink's The Reader, where fifteen-year-old Michael Berg is involved in a secretive, intense, and passionate relationship with thirty-six-year-old Hanna Schmitz. Hanna is leading the relationship so much so that when they fight, regardless of who is right or wrong, Michael always gives in and apologizes in fear of loosing her. He never stands up for himself. As time progresses, Michael takes it upon himself to be present and involve himself in Hanna's trail. Once Michael figures out the secret Hanna is hiding he is thrown into complete confusion on whether to help Hanna and how to execute this. After the trials, towards the end of the novel, Michael is still unsure of how to define his relationship with Hanna. The passionate, secretive relationship that Hanna imposes on Michael stunts his development, which leads to the confusion that dominates his life.…

When I first read this story in elementary school, I never saw the true meaning behind the words written by Henryk Sienkiewicz. This novel didn’t really mean too much to me then, mostly because I never understand the deep importance of the point hidden behind this story. Now, after many years I finally realized what Sienkiewicz was trying to tell us in his novel. And I was so surprised how such a short story, which could be read in several minutes, can be so powerful. There are so many meanings and symbols hidden behind author’s words and behind his novel. I really envy Sienkiewicz for his talent. I personally believe that there is no other writer who could take a long story and then condense it into a short novel with so many messages hidden behind his words. His images of nature are simply unbelievable. It made me feel like I was right there on the lighthouse with the main character of the story.…

As mentioned above we hear about the main character Stolpestad. He’s a police officer who doesn’t seem to be pleased about how his life turned out to be. He doesn’t seem happy about his job and it just seems like his life is at a standstill: “Was toward the end of your shift, a Saturday, another one of those long slow lazy afternoons of summer – sun never burning through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain – ...” The day is described in a bit negative way because of the choice of words such as “long” “lazy” and “slow”. But it also seems like both these word and the weather description are a symbol of Stolpestad’s life. Everything seems a kind of inadequate – just like the weather. The sun is never really shining so much that it’s sunny, but at the same time, it’s not really rain either. The weather seems a kind of stagnant - just as Stolpestads life.…

Get up, go to work, go home, go to bed, rinse and repeat. Many people are familiar with this situation, this loop. The concept of stagnation is not a new feeling amongst most people. Stagnation is the feeling of one’s life running on repeat, be it family, work or something different. When it's the same stuff day in, day out, hating it until you finally lie dead and buried in the ground. This 'all too much known' road through your life is almost impossible to escape. "Stolpestad" is a short story written by William Lychack, and it deals with the concept of stagnation. The story is named after the main character, a policeman named Stolpestad. Stolpestad is called in to finish off an injured dog for a little boy and his mother. Later in the evening the boy's father and the boy himself shows up at his doorstep, informing him that the dog isn't dead, and that they had to call in a vet to get it done.…
