Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs. Though, Steve Jobs is not a college graduate, he is still a very successful man. Jobs speaks from the heart, and uses personal experiences to relate to his audience. Jobs uses emotional anecdotes to show their own character and history. He starts his life story off with an account of how his “biological mother was a young, unwed graduate student” (Jobs) when she had decided to put Jobs up for adoption. Such an emotional story, and having such a disadvantage with such a destitute background as a bastard child to a young women; shows that even the most underprivileged students lives can reach success. The company he starts later in life grows from a two man, garage operation, into a “two billion dollar company with over 4,000 employees” (Jobs). Jobs tells The Stanford graduates that they can be widely successful if they follow their dreams which creates hope along with excitement. His remark is basically a promise that if they followed their dreams, they will also be successful and happy, similar to himself. Jobs even gives the students a more intimate view into his life. Using the statement “About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer,” he is creating not only a personal connection, but an emotional connection as well. Jobs is a strong man, and can conquer any challenge that is thrown at him. He uses emotional descriptions of his undesirable background in all three of his stories. What makes Jobs such a great speaker is he has:
A strong opening;
Simple classical structure; the Rule of Three rich figures of speech; and a recurring theme of birth, death, and rebirth. Jobs uses simple structure and sentences. He has an opening, then his three stories, and ends with a conclusion. He guides his audience through his entire speech with simple sentences such as:
“Today I want to tell you three stories.”
“The first story is about connecting the dots.”
“My second story is about love and loss.”
