Stereotypes In 'The Good Samaritan'
Imagine people laughing at you, pointing at you, saying mean things to you, just because you are different. Things like this happen too much in this day and time. People assume, people say hurtful things, and people are scared. We need to learn to honor the feelings of others, make others feel valued, and ignore the stereotypes. In the world today, we tend to forget that other people have feelings too. For example, in “The Good Samaritan” a person had been injured very badly; therefore, they could not get up or call for help. People simply walked by the person, completely ignoring the fact there was nothing he could do. Imagine how that man felt, watching people look at him, and just keep walking. His feelings were surely hurt. Additionally, I saw a woman once. She was carrying three bags full of things. She also had a child with her that she was trying to keep up with. She was an elderly African-American lady. I was sitting in the car waiting for my Grandmother watching her struggle, thinking to myself about going to help her. Just as I decided that I would, I heard a man’s voice scream, “Get out of the way you old (bad word!)” It astonished me that the man had no remorse for how he made that woman feel. In “Desiree’s Baby” people were very against the ones who were different from them simply because that is what everyone else believed. Most white people were against African-Americans, so the ones who were un-sure about how they felt went along with everyone else. Furthermore, I have witnessed someone getting verbally abused because they were Mexican. A white female who was much younger than both of the boys stepped in and said, “He’s just as nice as you are.” It amazed me how the little girl was brave enough to intervene in a situation most people would be scared to. It will never hurt to speak your mind when you are speaking up for

The immigrant groups that have come to the United States of America have suffered from several stereotypes that White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) had created. Some of the immigrant groups that had the same stereotypes are the Irish, Chinese, and the Mexicans. WASPs used specific Political Cartoons to stereotype the Irish, Chinese, and Mexican as inferior races because of how they looked and as violent because of their past. To WASPs, they believed that not only God made the hierarchy, but that they could prove it.…

Helen Hill Sociology 11:00am Class The article “Bad Boys” explains the stereotypes and generalizations placed upon young boys based on the way they dress. It emphasizes on the significance on racial socialization because it sets young African American boys apart from other children. At a young age they do not realize the significance and impact that these stereotypes placed upon them will make. This stereotype threat, a term coined by Claude Steele, explains the situation in which there are imposed roles placed upon these children based on not only their race but also their clothing.…

We create stereotypes based on our experiences and not all of them are bad. In the novel “If You Come Softly” Ellie and Jeremih bump into each other in the hallway and it was love at first sight. Elie Wiesel's Heroism

A quote that exemplifies this is by Elie Wiesel, who once said, "When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude." Elie Wiesel is a writer, who was put through Auschwitz as a Jew during the Holocaust. He has been given many reasons to give up on humanity, but he chooses not to. Though Wiesel has seen unspeakable things, he still has love to give. A second example of this is human rights activist Malala Yousafzai. She fights for education for all, specifically girls in third world countries. While speaking on anti-discrimination, she said, "There should be no discrimination against languages people speak, skin color, or religion." In today's world, though we like to pretend otherwise, there is a lot of hate centered around those things. People see someone different and instantly separate themselves from that person. They become ignorantly hateful. Malala speaks against that hatefulness, and rejects the idea that people should be treated differently based on those things. A final example is Mattie stepanek, a poet and a peace advocate. He was diagnosed with a rare muscular dystrophy, and only lived to fourteen. A quote of his, speaking about peace, is, "If we simply, but profoundly, choose to make peace an attitude and a habit and a reality, peace is possible." Stepanek is saying that if one acted peacefully, and then others did the same, the world would be filled with peace. Just like Wiesel, Mattie's life had not been kind to him. He had valid reasons to be angry, but through it all he smiled, and imagined a world where everyone could do the…

Growing up in my somewhat sheltered home community and then living in other areas of the United States I have learned over time that racism, discrimination, and stereotyping is practiced by all races. Most people may not even realize they are performing these behaviors when they are occurring. This can be seen in schools across America daily. When I was in high school there were different groups of people that only hung out with each other. Depending on how a person dressed, what race the person was, or what his or her grades were they were labeled and put into a specific group. No one dared try mingling with a group he or she did not belong to with fear of being humiliated. To prevent discrimination all clubs in school were open for all students to join. However, there was only 1.5% Black students in the entire…

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” This shows that you should respect people based on their personality, not by the color of their skin. Everyone should be respected despite our differences. Our differences make us unique and ourselves.…

People come from all walks of life and all have something different to offer from the next person. Unfortunately, sometimes their diversity leads them to being victims of ridicule and criticism. Even I have been discriminated against and put into a category due to my culture and religion.
