Stereotypes Contributing To The LGBT Community
I gladly belong to the LGBT+ community. While everyone is different, there are certain attributes in people that connect them to others, forming groups of people that understand and sympathize with one another. Our community is much more than people with certain sexual preferences and gender identities. We provide love and support to one another because we know what it feels like to be denied the same love and support from someone else for reasons we cannot control. I am a transgender man who isn't out to many; most people think I'm a lesbian. The people that I am out to support me and prop me up, a trait that not every community has, but the LGBT+ community prides itself in. The LGBT+ community in my school is centralized in the Gay Straight Alliance, a club that openly accepts everyone (not just members of the LGBT+ community!) …show more content…
I am the president of my school's GSA; I orchestrate meetings and develop fundraisers that go towards a scholarship at the end of every school year. We understand everyone needs acceptance and a sense of community, but people also require help financially. That's why we award a scholarship to the most deserving student- one that has significantly contributed to the LGBT+ community in ways that have stood out above the rest. I also contribute by applying my knowledge and experience to help identify with and guide people who are struggling with their own lives.     At schools youth are not as knowledgeable in lgbtq+ as liked. Youth still get bullied, harrassed, judged, and even go as far as experiencing physical violence in show of dislike towards sexual preference and/or gender identification. Love is not a feeling that youth experience in the halls at school because of the lack of acceptance. 15 year old Dylan is a prime example of youth lgbtq. He came out when he was 12 years old and was fully open and accepting and immediately made actions to widen the knowledge in the basis of LGBTQ+. However, while he was loving and accepting, his peers were not. In school, he reported being called “ Fag, Butt Pirate, Fairy, Aids whore, homo, queer, and sissy.” (Bochenek, Michael. Almost immediately after the verbal violence had started, reportedly physical violence soon followed. “One day in the parking lot outside of his school, six students surrounded him and threw a lasso around his neck, saying ‘let’s tie the faggot to the back of the truck’” immediately after the incident he ran inside the school to find one of his vice-principles “‘I was still hysterical’ he explained ‘I was trying to explain, but I was stumbling over my words.
