Identify the Problem of the
Study
All studies require that a research problem be identified and stated, and must be simple, concise, and in clear terms. Such problem will be the focus of a case study.

State the Objectives of the Study
The General and specific objectives of the study must be categorically expressed. Such objectives will be the bases in conducting research activities.

Determine the Sources of Data
The research must identify his sources of data or information, how he is going to select his sources, what variables are to be included and excluded, and how these variables are to be selected or determined.

Determine the Procedures of
Investigation
The researcher should identify the procedures of data gathering, the tools used in data gathering so that the researcher will be able to proceed smoothly with the research activities according to the time frame of the study.

Collate, Analyze, and
Interpret the Data
After gathering the data, they are collated, arranged, and presented for easy analysis and interpretation. Limitations or Weaknesses of Case Study Method
1. The researcher may select convenient cases, which are not typical for a case study.
2. The researcher may find difficulty selecting the factors to be studied due to different environmental settings and sampling sizes.

3. Hypotheses cannot be tested due to small sampling size and limited number of variables.
4.Reliable and genuine data may not be obtained in some case studies due to limited primary sources. Experimental Methods of
Research

Several Reasons For Conducting
Experiments in a Natural Setting:
1. To test the external validity of a laboratory findings.
2. To improve conditions under which people live and work.

Experiment also
Involves…….

Manipulation of One or
More Variables which includes the:
-Independent Variable
-Dependent Variable

Characteristics of a Good
Experiment
- Internal Validity
-Reliabililty
-Sensitivity
-External Validity

Internal Validity
-if the cause and effect is interpretable, that is by manipulating the independent variable, it can cause a change in dependent variable.

Reliability
An experiment is reliable if the obtained difference is likely to be found again and if the experiment is to be repeated. Sensitivity
-an experiment is sensitive if such experiment is likely to detect the effect of an independent variable even when that effect is a small one.

External Validity
-if the findings can be generalized to individuals, settings, and conditions beyond the scope of the particular experiment. Purpose of Conducting
Internship
- To provide empirical tests of hypotheses derived from theories.
-experiments can be used to test the effectiveness of treatments and program.

Two Conditions for an
Effective Experiment
-Experimental Control
-Random Assignment

Three Conditions of Control:
-Covariation

-Time Order
-Plausible Alternative Courses

In the case of Honig v. Doe, it was the first case to reach the Supreme Court dealing with discipline of special education students. This case took place in 1988 after two students from the San Francisco School District with emotional disabilities and aggressive tendencies were threatened with expulsion. John Doe (a pseudonym) was a socially and physically awkward 17 year-old who had difficulty controlling his impulses and anger. From early on in school, physical abnormalities, speech difficulties, and poor grooming habits resulted in his being the target of classmates teasing and ridiculing him. One day, in response to taunts from a fellow student at a developmental center for disabled students, he reacted in an explosive manner anticipated by his individualized education (IEP). He choked a student with enough force to leave abrasions on the boy’s neck. Afterwards, while being taken to the principal’s office, John kicked out a window. John was suspended from school for 5 days. The principal recommended that he be expelled. A lawsuit was filed, and the federal district court issued a temporary order directing the school to return John to his then current educational placement.…

    A. The research scenario question I choose that could be studied using the scientific method is question 1: How much do reading scores change from the beginning of the school year to the end of the school year? “Scientific method is an approach to knowledge that relies on collecting data, generating a theory to explain the data, producing testable hypotheses based on the theory, and testing those hypotheses empirically” (Morris & Maistro, 2012, pg 8). The steps of the scientific method that I will be taking to conduct my research are: ask the question, do background research, construct a hypothesis, test my hypothesis by doing an experiment, analyze my data and draw a conclusion, and communicate my results.…

To identify the problem, one has to formulate the hypothetical cause and effect in relations among variables. This step involves identifying variables, behaviours and particular environmental and physiological events. Experiments involve the manipulation of independent variables and the observation of dependent variables. Each variable must be operationally defined and the independent variable must be controlled so that no other variable is responsible for changes in the dependent variable, this procedure designs your experiment.…

Scientific research involves a systematic process that focuses on being objective and gathering a multitude of information for analysis so that the researcher can come to a conclusion. This process is used in all research and evaluation projects, regardless of the research method (scientific method of inquiry, evaluation research, or action research). The process focuses on testing hunches or ideas in a park and recreation setting through a systematic process. In this process, the study is documented in such a way that another individual can conduct the same study again. This is referred to as replicating the study. Any research done without documenting the study so that others can review the process and results is not an investigation using the scientific research process. The scientific research process is a multiple-step process where the steps are interlinked with the other steps in the process. If changes are made in one step of the process, the researcher must review all the other steps to ensure that the changes are reflected throughout the process. Parks and recreation professionals are often involved in conducting research or evaluation projects within the agency. These professionals need to understand the eight steps of the research process as they apply to conducting a study. Table 2.4 lists the steps of the research process and provides an example of each step for a sample research study.…
