Stephen Chbosky's The Perks Of Being A Wallflower
“It’s amazing how one person can change your life without your knowledge. Love is an amazing feeling” (Mustafa). In Stephen Chbosky’s novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, freshman Charlie is taken under the wing of step-siblings Sam and Patrick. His new friends teach him the ins and outs of high school throughout their dramatic senior year, and Charlie falls in love with Sam even though she is clear that they will never be together. She becomes Charlie’s best friend and biggest influence, changing his life without him realizing it. Her very essence allows Charlie to grow outside of the comfort zone he created for himself. Sam is round and static because she is a compound character with emotions and motives that does not change throughout …show more content…
Charlie’s sister states that “Sam has low self-esteem” and that “she used to have a reputation” at the school because of her relations with so many boys (Chbosky 49). Contrarily, Charlie sees her in a different way, “I love Sam. It’s not a movie kind of love either. I just look at her sometimes, and I think she is the prettiest and nicest person in the world” (Chbosky 47). These two contrasting views about Sam shows that she is a round character because the difference in views represents the different layers to Sam’s individuality. If two characters can have completely opposing views of the same person, then that person must have multiple motives or emotions, making them a round character. To demonstrate this, I created a playlist of songs that represent Sam to further prove that Sam is a round character by revealing her complex thoughts and motivations. One song on my playlist is Sia’s “Chandelier” which took the world by storm with its catchy melody. However, few people know what the song is truly about. Sia sings, “sun is up, I’m a mess. Gotta get out now, gotta run from this. Here comes the shame” (Sia). According to one source, Sia suffered from drug and alcohol abuse, and her song is …show more content…
By comparing Sam’s thoughts and motives from the beginning of the novel to the end, it is seen that Sam never changed, making her a static character. Toward the beginning of the novel, during a Secret Santa party, Sam says to Charlie, “I want to make sure the first person who kisses you loves you” (Chbosky 70). Sam obviously has a love for Charlie, even if it is simply platonic. She demonstrates this by the way she both talks to and acts towards him in this scene; she hopes to be able to protect Charlie from the harsh world she had grown up in. This same love is seen at the end of the novel when Sam makes a deal with Charlie, “When things get to be too much at college, I’ll call you, and when things get to be too much here, you call me” (Chbosky 149). Sam’s love has not changed for Charlie at all throughout the novel; she clearly still loves him and wants to protect him. Her words are always full of truth, love, and unwavering support. Sam is a static character because her emotions and motives never fluctuate throughout the course of her dramatic senior year. One song that connects to this static friendship is “Graduation.” The band, Vitamin C, sings, “come whatever, we will still be friends forever” (Vitamin C). I imagine this song being played during the graduation scene in The Perks of Being a Wallflower; I think it accurately displays

Chaim Potok’s book The Chosen takes place in the 1940s and is the story of two boys trying to become and stay friends even though they are from two different Jewish sects. It is not that To Kill a Mockingbird is an awful or terrible book. While reading To Kill a Mockingbird, readers will enjoy a well-written book, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and a classic. Yet, high school students will relate more to the two main characters of The Chosen as they are 15 and in high school at the beginning of the story. I have mixed feelings about the book, The Boy Who Owned the School by Gary Paulsen. Even though the book has a happy ending, the story is very dark. Jacob the protagonist thinks he is ugly, he is bullied at school, he tries to becomes the phantom student that roams from class to class, he has no friends, his parents are alcoholics and they pay no attention to him, and his sister hates him. If that were not enough, Jacob sleeps in a dark, dingy basement on a cot, while the rest of his family sleeps upstairs. His room is more like a dungeon than a bedroom. Although the book ends with Jacob and Maria going out and with his mother paying more attention to him, I expected Jacob to change and stop hiding from everyone, but the book does not give…

In the beginning of the film, Charlie struggles with making friends in the first couple of days of his freshman year. Charlie adapts and interacts well with people and is able to make friends easily and quickly. Chbosky portrays this idea in the wide angle shot of the large crowd in the football game, when Charlie approached Patrick and says “Hey Patrick”. "Hey, you're in my shop class”, says Patrick. Eventually Charlie is told to sit next to him and they continue their friendly conversation and with time meets a girl named Sam. From then onwards they made good friends and was later introduced to more people. Chbosky highlights the fact that Charlie becomes easily able to seek a conversation with someone in front of a large crowd, from which then lead to an invitation to his first ever party. At the party Charlie became emotional after realising the fact that he was being noticed and appreciated by the group of his presence. Patrick raised his drink and asked everyone to do the same. “To Charlie” and the whole group said, “To Charlie". Chbosky shows in the wide shot angle of when Charlie was drinking his milkshake and sitting on a lower level than his two other friends, that he has become recognised by the group, being the centre of attention by being himself, he gains the trust of others and is told important secrets compared to his original life. Charlie demonstrates the benefits of being a wallflower…

The most effective way to establish and preserve freedom is sticking to one’s own person morals. The definition of “moral”, is a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do (Merriam-Webster). As a human in today’s society, it is can be easy to distinguish what your morals are and who you want to be. The morals one sets for themselves go into making of what freedom is to them. When a human has the morals of a decent person, they can act, speak, and think in a way respectful way that doesn’t interrupt another’s morals. In Bradbury’s short story The Pedestrian, there is a theme of lacking imagination and individualism. As long with The Iroquois Constitution, the unexpressed values shown were peace, death, treatment of humanity, and the organization of confederacy. In Brook’s poem, she outlines the outermost importance of life.…
