Stephanie Pilavin's Passion For Theatre
Stephanie Pilavin is a rising sophomore at Muhlenberg College, where she is majoring in theatre with a double concentration in acting and directing. She is psyched to join the summer staff after being a camper since age 6! Stephanie has grown up at TPAC, both as a student and as a teacher. She was an intern for musical theatre and dance classes for 10 years, and has also junior directed and crewed many Youth Musicals. Samm helped her find her passion for theatre (back in her Broadway Babies days), and she hopes to someday do the same. She can’t wait to see this year's TPAC campers experience the

Being entrusted to direct a summer camp for twenty-eight counselors and ninety campers has taught me to become a more versatile and confident leader. The Indian-American summer camp, from planning to production, is entirely student-run. The camp is very close to my heart as I previously was a camper. The camp allowed me to build friendships with my peers and my counselors, whom I looked up to as role models. It provided a support system for me as I was able to connect with people who could relate to me. I was incredibly humbled and driven to preserve the camp's legacy.…

There are 5 types of play that defined by Mildred Parten. The first one is called solitary, child plays independently and usually play with toys rather than the children nearby. On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

Giving people an escape for an hour or two is how I’m trying to positively influence the world now. Sharing the wisdom of a play with an audience creates a very genuine experience that virtually erases the line between performers and observers because both indulge in the moment. Barnard’s Theater program gives me the opportunity to reach out to more people, and learn in one of the most artistic cities in the world. I have a gentle demeanor but my will is strong. Barnard nurtures girls with unstoppable determination, and I believe that I stand in the same category. They produce women who take on the world and change it for the…

Every Friday night for the past three years, I have dedicated myself to supporting the Loose Moose Theatre. The not-for-profit has an international reputation for innovation and excellence in improvisational theatre, and focuses on providing affordable shows to all ages. When off-stage, I volunteer in positions such as box office, concession, and stage usher. On top of those duties, however, I also train and support new company members with my experience and expertise. As a result, I have helped improved volunteer retention by making others feel welcomed and supported. The greater impact, however, is the affect I’ve had on building diversity in the theatre. As a visible Asian minority, I tend to stand out from others in the theatre, especially…

Among the Blue Ridge Mountains in the state of North Carolina, it is perceived that birds presently chirp while the sun’s process of shining on the earth occurs. To add, the wind swirls with rushes of cool air, and the explosion of song comes from young girls. My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, my stuffy nose runs. I grasp the cold metal handle of the school door, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustomed to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated area backstage. We struggle through multiple doors and long curtains until we reach our destination. The first aid kit mends our minor cuts and bruises created in the process. Gathering our senses, we collect the makeup and costumes and begin a brisk walk to the classroom assigned to us. The first performance is in an hour and a half,…

On September 22, I went to the 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical put on by Capital University. In the play, kids compete to be the spelling bee champion for their school, and it details their lives and why the spelling bee is important to them. In the beginning, I thought it would be a very fun and witty play, but it was much deeper than I expected. The kids had real life and relatable problems that even as an adult I could imagine my life in similar scenarios. A couple of the kids were incredibly smart, and even though they prided themselves on their school work and their intelligence, but they have something fundamentally missing in their lives. This can be found in many people’s lives, so even though the play was about a group of kids it had a much more serious underlying theme.…

OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…
