As many of us know, Steph Curry is arguably one of the best athletes to ever step foot on a basketball court. Even with all that, he is just human; therefore, will try to make a great impression. I’m going to discuss the following concepts as they relate to Curry trying to make an impression: Self-Presentation, Assimilation Effect, Warranting, and Saving Face.
When analyzing Steph Curry’s Twitter account, I noticed at least a couple of pictures of the superstar playing basketball with young children who were smiling and laughing. Steph is acting upon the concept of self-presentation, the process in which people use messages, cues, etc. to convey an impression that is beneficial to their interests. By using the visual messages of him playing with children, Curry is illustrating the impression that he is a great role model and a leader to younger generations. So his teammates and even people from rival teams use the theory of assimilation effect numerous times on his twitter account. Assimilation Effect is the notion that something looks better by virtue of being associated with something that is also good. Curry’s awe rubs off on those around him, and as a result his skill and popularity bring up that of his entire team, The Golden State Warriors, and their twitter pages. Other players’ popularity and twitter followings increase merely on virtue of being in Twitter conversations and retweets by Curry
