Step Mom
In the movie, Stepmom, the struggles of divorce, trust, and dealing with a new stepmom are being tried. There are many different issues within the movie that deal with conflict. Which is why I chose the topic conflict for this paper. The first concept and scene I chose for conflict stems from the management style compromise. The management style compromise is the style that attempts to find the middle ground in a conflict (pg. 235). One particular scene stood out to me in the movie and that scene had to do with the father Luke and the mother Jackie. After Isabel (the stepmom) had been working a long day at her photo shoot and trying to keep an eye out on Anna and Ben the worst happened, Ben was lost. After Ben was safely found at the zoo, Jackie wouldn’t budge and demanded a court order for Isabel to never be with the kids alone again. This was something Jackie and Luke agreed to never do so Luke was not going to let this happen now. He went over to Jackie’s house and talked it out with her to give Isabel another chance and to not go to court. After much consideration, Jackie agreed not to get a court order. I feel this was a compromise because they both agreed to that middle ground for the kid’s well-being in the end. Another concept I chose for conflict was the ego conflict style. Ego conflict style is a conflict in which the original issue is ignored as partners attack each other’s self-esteem (pg. 226). The scene I chose for this concept was the scene where Isabel wanted to take Anna to the Pearl Jam concert. Jackie was completely against it because the concert was on a school night and Anna was to not be out that late. Isabel dropped it for respect for Jackie. Later on Isabel was to find out that Jackie deliberately got tickets to the concert and took Anna instead. I felt like this was ego conflict because it came off as a personal attack against Isabel and Jackie showed no remorse for going behind her back. Jackie’s intent to buy those tickets was from

Psychodynamic conflicts: this is the conflict between the three personality components. Our personality is supposed to be shaped by the number, nature and outcome of these conflicts. Conflict is important, and it is also important to recognize the different types of conflicts that you may be involved with. By knowing this, you can recognize the state of mind you’re in and if possible avoid it. Pseudo conflicts are one of the five different types. These are not real conflicts; they are only perceived as conflicts. Pseudo conflicts can result from two causes: faulty assumptions and false dilemmas. Mistaking assumptions for facts may explain many pseudo conflicts. Pseudo conflicts that result from false dilemmas occur when the parties involved see only two choices as solutions to the problem. Another is Fact conflicts; this kind of conflicts happen when individuals disagree about information that could easily be verified whether by statics or some other resource. Ego conflicts occur when a dispute centers on status or power; this reminds of two of my cousins when they let their egos get in the way of them winning their athletic competitions. Even though it was obvious that Angel was more of an athletic guy than Joe, he always felt like he had something to prove. Instead of them continuing to be on the same time for these competitions, Joe felt as though he had to show Angel that he was able to do everything better than him as well as get the most girls phone numbers. This kind of ego conflict they had affected their ability to continue to work together. Value conflicts focus on personal beliefs that you hold near and dear and is one that is very important to me, because at a previous job another assistant manager decided that he wasn’t going to ask all the employees their availability on the weekends. He felt that it was okay for him to ask just the ones he…

According to our required text there are five conflict styles. Our text states that these five styles can be understood by looking at the various combinations of two related dimensions: (1) how concerned you are about yourself and what you seek to get out of the conflict, and (2) how concerned you are about the other person and assisting the other in getting what he or she wants. I believe that the interpersonal conflict that took place in the TV show is a combination of competition and compromising. The elements of the conflict style competition are a high concern for yourself and a low concern for the other party in the conflict. A competitive style is evident when an individual engages in aggressive or competitive behavior by being critical, having a win–lose orientation, and engaging in direct confrontation. The elements of the conflict style compromising are a moderate concern both for yourself…

The text suggests several key ideas about conflict It demonstrates that conflict can make individuals work harder to achieve their dreams and can bring out the strength of the human spirit through a sense of hope. It also shows that conflict can sometimes be negative when it can lead to long lasting emotional trauma, when nothing is gained during conflict then it can said to be also negative.
