When walking down the street there is an eight-year-old sitting on the side of the street crying, with dirty, ripped clothing. The young child is nothing but skin and bones from not eating for a week. If there was not a set age for becoming an adult this would be a common scene. The law recognizes an 18-year-old as an adult. If there was not a set age for adulthood, parents could stop caring for their children at young ages. The law requires parents to care for their children up to the age 18. On account of the law, statutory rape would be a difficult situation to address. Statutory rape is for someone sexually assaulted under the age of 18. If statutory rape was not used to convicting rapists, then rape victims would be more terrified to make an accusation. Do you really want your child or loved one to lose the right to file this against someone? Most criminals are charged with this crime. If statutory rape did not exist, these criminals would be spending less time in jail. In 2000, there was one statutory rape for every three forcible rapes. Three out of five victims of statutory rape are aged 14 to 15. Three out of ten statutory rape incidents are boyfriend, girlfriends. Six out of ten incidents were acquaintances (ncjrs.gov).
