Leonard Euler was born on April 15, 1707 in Basil, Switzerland (Patterson, 1998). He was brought up in the church (Patterson, 1998). His father Paul Euler was pastor of a reformed church as well as his mother’s father (Wikipedia, 2012). At that time, Basel was one of the main locations where mathematics was practiced in Europe (Patterson, 1998). Euler started school when he was 7 years old and was tutored by Johann Bernoulli, Europe’s foremost mathematician and family friend, who was hired by his father Bernoulli’s had a major influence on Euler’s passion for mathematics (Patterson, 1998). By the age of 13, Euler was attending lectures at the local university and in 1723 gained his Master of Philosophy with a dissertation comparing the natural philosophy systems of Newton and Descartes (Patterson, 1998). Euler continued furthering his education by enrolling in more classes and dedicating all of his spare time to studying mathematics (Patterson, 1998).
It wasn’t until 1727 that Euler’s talents began to be recognized (Patterson, 1998). It was here in St. Petersburg where Euler began working on different theories, including the production of the human voice, sound and music, and the mechanics of vision (Patterson, 1998). He was also working on the telescopic and microscopic perception (Patterson, 1998). The construction of telescopes and microscopes was made possible because of the basis of Euler’s work (Patterson, 1998).
Not too long after becoming the Director of Mathematics at the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences in 1731,Euler married Katharina Gesell x (Wikipedia,2012). The couple had five children who survived childhood out of thirteen x (Wikipedia, 2012).
Euler worked in nearly every area of mathematics including geometry, infinitesimal calculus, trigonometry, algebra, and number theory, as well as continuum physics, and the lunar theory(Wikipedia,2012). He introduced the concept of a

Archimedes is universally acknowledged to be the greatest of ancient mathematicians. He studied at Euclid's school (probably after Euclid's death), but his work far surpassed the works of Euclid. His achievements are particularly impressive given the lack of good mathematical notation in his day. His proofs are noted not only for brilliance but for unequalled clarity, with a modern biographer (Heath) describing Archimedes' treatises as "without exception monuments of mathematical exposition. Archimedes made advances in number theory, algebra, and analysis, but is most renowned for his many theorems of plane and solid geometry. He was first to prove Heron's formula for the area of a triangle.…

David Hilbert was born January 23, 1862, in Konigsberg, Prussia he died February 14,1943, in Gottingen Germany from appendicitis at the age of 81. He was born to his father Otto who was a reputable city judge and his mother Maria who was interested in philosophy and astronomy. David Hilbert was baptized and brought up according to the Reformed Protestant Church. However later on he became a non believer and argued that mathematical truth was independent of the existence of God. At the age of 10, Hilbert began as a student at the Friedrichskollegium Gymnasium, a high school for academically talented children, where he studied for seven years. He graduated from the Wilhelm Gymnasium at the highest academic level. After Hilbert graduated from…

There have been many great discoveries in all studies of science and more are yet to come. A mathematician and leading physicist of the 1800s, Christian Doppler has definitely enriched the field of science through his discovery. The discovery that Doppler found is called today the Doppler Effect. His perseverance and ambition has taken him a long way to success. All of these qualities have been able to be seen right from his childhood years.…

The Bernoulli brothers were two outstanding mathematicians of the late 17th century and early 18th century. They were born in Basel, Switzerland and both graduated from Basel University. The elder brother, Jacob was offered a job as a professor at the university and Johann asked him to teach him mathematics. Their rivalry was born soon after and it is hard to tell whether or not it contributed to their success or not. They established an early correspondence with Gottfried Leibniz but weren’t just his disciples. They plowed their own way in the mathematical world, contributing to probability and infinitesimal calculus on their own. After Jacob died from tuberculosis in 1705 at the age of 51 in Basel, Johann took his position at the university. He went on to teach Leonhard Euler and Guillaume de l’Hopital.…

Pythagoras is often referred to as the first pure mathematician. He was born on the island of Samos, Greece in 569 BC. Various writings place his death between 500 BC and 475 BC in Metapontum, Lucania, Italy. His father, Mnesarchus, was a gem merchant. His mother's name was Pythais. Pythagoras had two or three brothers.…

The 14th century was a mathematically barren one. Inclusive of this century was the hundred years’ war and black death which killed more than 1/3 of Europe’s population. However, mathematics during this period did not entirely die out. The greatest mathematician of this period was Nicole Oresme (1323-1282) of Normandy. He wrote five mathematical works. In one of this appears the process of locating points by coordinates, which foreshadowed modern coordinate geometry.…

One of the most important discoveries that Johann Carl Fredrich Gauss made was at the end of his college years, he discovered something that at the time mathematics did not believe was possible. He discovered that a regular polygon with 17 sides could be drawn using just a compass and a straight edge. The first theorem he proved was, “The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra.” This theorem says that every algebraic equation has at least one root or solution. Later he published a book called, “Disquisitions Arithmetic” which he published in 1801. It showed the study of the number theory and also provided proof for, “The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra.” Also he calculated the orbit of asteroid Ceres, and was able to predict its correct position on the basis of very few accurate observations.…

Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure.…
