Statement of Purpose
I have a very clear objective- to be good at what I do and enjoy in the process. I want to be resilient in seeking this objective and for this to happen, I need a purpose. I found this purpose in studying Civil Engineering, more specifically in Structural Engineering.
Science and mathematics have been my strong suit since my schooldays, as is evident from the grades I received. I have strived to be an engineer since my high school. I have been waiting for an opportunity to apply my concepts of mathematics and physics in the real world. My father, who is a mechanical engineer from the same college I am graduating from, played a huge role in inspiring me to pursue engineering. Amongst all branches of engineering, the range and application of Civil Engineering is the broadest and the most visible.
I feel privileged to be pursuing Civil Engineering from B.M.S College of Engineering, Bangalore whose Department of Civil Engineering has been accredited with the highest rating by the National Bureau of Accreditation, India. Being a part of this institute has helped me develop a positive outlook towards persistent learning. Taking up civil engineering led me through a complete new journey of self- discoveries and explorations. Majorly because I was going to be the first civil engineer in the family, breaking all norms. I’ve laid emphasis on acquiring knowledge at every stage of this journey. I have developed a strong interest towards Structural Engineering during my undergraduate study. I have done consistently well in understanding the nuances and the basics of this subject. The various courses such as Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Geology, Strength of Materials, Building Materials and Testing, Analysis of Structures, Concrete technology, Design of Steel Structures and Structural Dynamics which have been part of my curriculum have helped me acquire the necessary skills to pursue my studies further in Structural Engineering.

I decided to pursue civil engineering because, I can easily solve problems and can think outside of box. Civil engineering requires the ability to use physics and problem solving in real life situations. These are things that come easily to me and I enjoy doing them. I have chosen to attend NAIT because it offers one of the best programs for engineering in Alberta and the classes are not as large as other colleges. I am going to accomplish my goal by first taking all of my required classes in high school. To even enroll into NAIT’s engineering program I must have taken and passed Math 30-1, Physics 30, and Grade 12 english and have passed with 75% overall grade. To prepare for my transition from high school to college, I will work during…

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…

Since I am interested in civil engineering, I paid a lot of attention to learning the different branches in the work field. In the second meeting of this year, a geothermal engineer gave us a presentation on his daily job. I found it very intriguing for being able to travel sites in different kinds of geographical area while collecting data to research on the building types that can be built on that place. Knowing this definitely helped to understand the perception of the job about the challenges and the exciting part of it. I would love to take courses in geotechnical and I am also interested in having areas of focus in hydraulic and structural.…

My pursuit of physical therapy as a profession comes from my interest in healing the human body. Originally inspired by my grandfather, it has been my profession of choice for as long as i can remember; From a young child observing my grandfather unable to be mobile without the use of a cane, to my teenage years when I learned about the dynamics of the human body, to even more recently, after the excision of an osteochondroma on my femur during my time spent in the care of a physical therapist. <---RUN ON SENTENCE, ADJUST IT These humbling experiences have helped solidify my passion for physical therapy.…

In my quest for deciding what course to pursue, I also did a 6-week internship with Larsen & Toubro limited, at their under-construction ICICI Bank building (Composite Structure). Here, I was thoroughly exposed and actively involved in the various stages of construction, i.e. Planning, Field Execution, Safety Measures and Quality Control. This gave me a very good and generic idea on Civil Engineering projects, right from when it is conceived to the finishing stages.…

Many people in my life have also suggested that I pursue engineering with my good math and science skills. Pursuing engineering was without a doubt the easiest and hardest decision I have ever made. This will be my third year at Missouri University of Science and Technology and I can still safely say this is the right fit for my personal needs for self-growth. I am always challenged and required to think in a vastly different way than I have ever been used to. My intended major now was mechanical engineering which is still very interesting to me, but I discovered the many intricacies of civil engineering and decided that I need to pursue it with much haste and tenacity. Civil engineers are a vital part to society as they design so many various structures like roads building plans and even recreational areas. Now, the only way to become an official civil engineer is through formal education. Through this university, my future will be vastly changed for the better by adding significant value to it. The challenges I face every day at Missouri S&T will most certainly be worth it in the end, for I know what I want and need in my life when I become a civil…

The first day in college, I went about visiting my department and wow! I wondered at the excellence of the workshops and the facilities that I saw. Adding to my pleasure was the fact that my syllabus was completely tailor made, the way I wanted it to be. At Prince Shri Venkateshwara Padmavathy Engineering College, India, one of the top 50 engineering colleges in the country as well as one of the top 5 colleges in the state, I benefited from the breadth of Anna University syllabus which gave me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Civil Engineering such as Structural Analysis, Design of Reinforced Concrete Elements, Design of Steel Structures, Surveying, HIGHWAY ENGINEERING, RAILWAYS AIRPORTS AND HARBOUR ENGINEERING etc., The syllabus made way for me to streamline my thoughts and helped me look deeper into Transportation Engineering. These, incidentally, are the major fields that are involved with the Transportation and Highways, my child hood fascination. My thirst has not stopped with…

INTRODUCTION Contrary to the popular perception of life as an engineer, this talk will focus on different roles of, and played by, engineers. Not exactly life overwhelmed by calculations, designs (structural, hydrological, chips etc), drawings, supervision of construction etc. Life as an engineer is more than this, and sometime he (which should be taken to include “she”) plays roles which on first impression are not linked to their professional training. It is stressed that the training received as an engineer is part of the reasons which an engineer can display his versatility.…

Many years of education go into the foundation of a career in civil engineering. A high school degree is not enough to be a civil engineer and a bachelor 's degree in civil engineering or a related engineering discipline is only the first step. The length of study for a degree in engineering is typically four or five years and the completed degree is designated as a Bachelor of Engineering. In the course of this period, critical thinking skills and mathematical concepts related to the field of engineering are explored, setting a good foundation for a career.…
