STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Knowledge empowers one to breathe life into one’s dreams; and I would like to devote myself to educational pursuits that will help me make the most of my inherent talents. Innovation lies at the heart of product design and I aspire to be engaged in ideating new products and enhancing existing product designs on the lines of utility, value, sustainability, ethics, eco-friendliness and customer needs. Hence, my immediate goal is to undertake graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering with special focus on mechanical systems and design, which I believe is the necessary prelude for a career in product design.
In future, I want to pursue research in this constantly changing field of product design, which would allow me to blend knowledge and creativity to explore the myriad possibilities that can make life better. I intend to focus on problem solving and creating solutions that bring tangible benefits to mankind.
My ambitions are reinforced by an undergraduate degree in Manufacturing Processes and Automation Engineering from the prestigious Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, University of Delhi, where I was one of the 1000 successful candidates from over 2,40,000 applicants. In my sophomore year, I was nominated by one of my professors for a critical project on feeders. I designed and fabricated a rotary disc feeder, a material handling system which enables discrete feeding of small parts at a workstation in an assembly line. The project also involved a study of factors that influence the feed rate to optimize the performance of the system using the 2K factorial experimental approach. The resultant research paper on these findings was published in the proceedings of a national conference on Industrial Problems on Machines and Mechanisms (IPROMM 2010), Jaipur. This project stimulated my interest in product design and I made a conscious effort to seek out practical assignments that

Growing up, I always loved building with boxes of assorted Legos and K’NEX, and as I often spent most of my childhood playing around in the basement where my father stored all the scrap wood, tools, and screws, I inevitably began to adventure into the more creative world of designing and assembling without limitation. From my first experience building a stool for Cub Scouts to my most recent internship in the Biomedical Engineering department at the University of Delaware, I have constantly surrounded myself with creation, always exploring my inquisitive nature. My love for design especially draws me to Brown with its open curriculum and encouragement of a broad education in engineering while also specializing in my specific interest. Through…

IDEO, arguably the most successful design firm in the world, has been in the creativity and innovation business for over 20 years. IDEO started with a merger of three design companies, which brought together the capabilities to offer the design, development, and manufacturing of products for client companies. IDEO practices a non-formal five-phase process for development of a project, which uncovers the successes and failures of a design. These phases include frequent brainstorming, rapid and repeated prototyping, and concurrent engineering, which combines art with engineering to produce a functional and visually pleasing product. IDEO considers each phase of their process to be essential to development of a winning design. For two decades, IDEO has contributed to the design of thousands of new products ranging from a computer mouse to a stand-up toothpaste dispenser.…

Many people around the world want to build a career in Optics and Photonics and I am just one of them but I am different from others because of my eternal enthusiasm to study in this area. I started to dream about photonics and optical systems when I was at secondary school. In high school I started drawing optical systems. This made me more and more eager to study about optics and photonics. Step by step I was starting to make the little boy’s dream come true. After high school I decided to study Material Science or Physics to become more familiar with optic and photonic components. I started studying Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at Sakarya University Engineering Faculty at 2004. At university, I was selected student of honors for 4 times. I was a quite active student here and I became the chairman of the Material Science and Engineering Club. More important is that I started to improve my skills about photonics. That’s why, TUBITAK ( Turkish National Scientific and Technical Research Center) Materials Institute was very good place for me, so I started to do my training there in Electron Microscopy and XRD-Spectroscopy Laboratories. In TUBITAK I focused on spectroscopy techniques, photonics systems, photonic detection and characterization. Compulsory official training time was 1 month but I extended the time to 5 months for my self. My training result was (AA – in German System 1.0) excellent. Furthermore as a compulsory engineering design project I worked on Silicon-GermaniumNitrogen nanocables.…

    • Product development- In the past, product development was generational as companies focused on periodic product releases. Looking ahead, design will become increasingly iterative. With “evergreen design,” companies will improve products continuously. Even if the physical product remains unchanged, it can be updated via software in the cloud. As design philosophies change, the composition of the design team is also changing. In addition to mechanical engineers, companies need software engineers and data scientists.…

In today’s fast-paced world, every business is looking to have a competitive sustainable advantage over the competition. If a company wants to achieve this, they need to continually reduce costs, improve quality, enhance customer service, and so forth. To survive in the market, products must satisfy and delight customers. In order to do this, design is the most important aspect. By having a good design, half of the customer’s demand has been satisfied. Having a good design can also help enhance quality of the parts used, increase productivity, and reduce costs in manufacturing and assembly processes. Design for manufacturing is a process that is concerned with understanding “how product design interacts with the other components of the manufacturing system and in defining product design alternatives that help facilitate global optimization of the…
