When considering diversity, typically, ethnic diversity is the first thing considered; however, there are several types of diversity. In addition to diversity of ethnicity, culture, race, and religion, diversity of age, gender, geography, products, and skills are applicable when considering the impacts of management functions. “Starbucks dedicates itself to creating a workplace respecting and valuing people from diverse backgrounds, and enabling its employees to do their best work. We honor the unique combination of talents, experiences, and perspectives of each partner; making Starbucks success possible” (Starbucks, 2012, p. 1). In addition to the diversity of coffee and other products, Starbucks’ dedication leads to celebrating cultures, involvement in the community, and human connections. Starbucks respects and values diversity, an integral business principle of the organization. Starbucks developed an equation indicating diversity = inclusion + equity + accessibility (Starbucks, 2012). Inclusion defined as human connection and engagement, equity defined as fairness and justices, and accessibility defined as ease of use and free of barriers. The diversity strategy is company-wide focused on customers, suppliers, partners, and communities. Striving to recognize and respond to the unique needs and preferences of its customers, Starbucks ensures superb customer service by attempting to connect with customers in a culturally relevant manner. A diversity program works to increase the amount of women-owned and minority suppliers. Starbucks works to connect with partners who are as diverse as the communities served. Development of educational programs and other engagement methods assist with effective collaboration with partners. Support and investment in global communities and local neighborhoods is achieved through economic development and strategic partnerships enhancing the relations in the communities served.
