The Stanley Cup

Unlike other major sports trophies like such as in football and soccer, the Stanley Cup is not remade each year and winners of the cup keep it until a new champion is crowned. Every time I watch the Superbowl, I find myself (under the interrogative look of my friends) bitching about the effectiveness of “xyz” commercial that somehow succeeded in producing laughter among the audience. Then I start explaining that too often the joke becomes bigger than the brand and when it does, chances are you will most likely remember the punch line than the advertiser. If you just invested $2.6 million for a 30 sec. and everybody misses the point, it’s a huge waste of money.…

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been nothing but great since the end of the first half of the season. Even with a depleted team lacking verified pitching and consistent offense, they were able to overtake the best team in the first half of season, the San Francisco Giants and continue to strive to become one of the best teams in the major leagues. A number of Dodger starters are finally coming off the DL including Clayton Kershaw, Andre Etheir, and Rich Hill but there are a number of sporadic players like Enrique Hernandez, and Bud Norris, who are also coming off of it. The definition of rivalry has now reached the range of sports. To beat your rival is the greatest feeling in sports, because it gives the victor this type of swagger and bragging rights for the team/city that carries throughout the rest of the season. But it doesn’t just matter about the players and the results, but as a franchise of the Portland Timbers it can reach a new level with the adding of the fans, the stadium and the environment of the city on game day. The Portland Timbers are a better soccer club than the Seattle Sounders because of the players, the “keep it weird” Portland environment, and of course the fans.…

The average age for NBA drafting is 24 years old. Compared to the minimum, 19, there is a big gap because the players are not capable of being drafted when 19. Therefore, high school players shouldn't be eligible for the NBA draft. Making high school players eligible for the NBA draft prevents them from getting a basic education, makes it harder to find good players, and makes the new players more prone to getting injured.…

I'm tired and restless after a mentally draining day at school. There are blurred lights and angry drivers all around me as the tires of my car grind against the cold concrete. My dad pulls into the back parking lot and signals for me to get out of the car. I groan, knowing that I am in for a long practice, and slowly drag myself out of the front seat. I lug my hockey bags out of the trunk, and they become another nagging reminder of the grueling workout I'm about to face. My dad speeds away and I'm left alone, staring at the large, brightly lit building looming over me. The rink is in a low-income area, and beyond the cold, hard metal fence lies a dangerous neighborhood. The night air is warm and still,…

Chills running up my spine, rapid foggy breathes expelling in front of me like a car on a cold morning. The clock running down second by second with green illumination, it said we only played 4 periods of hockey, but truly we played 6 with triple overtime. I feel exhausted and wonder how much more I can give without collapsing. I grab my water bottle and begin to drink, and the distinct taste of iron from the water in the iron range rolls down my throat. Suddenly one of our players starts with full steam down the ice and his linemates followed, their strides looked simultaneous. Boisterous sounds of my teammates yelling and the sound of the half inch blades digging into the ice echoed through the small arena. The puck carrier begins to ride…
