Book Report in English III

Title: Squirrels
Author: Elizabeth Brightwen

Topic:
All about squirrels

Facts I already know about the topic: * Squirrels are rodents * Squirrels live on trees * They eat nuts and seeds * They are small bushy tailed animal

New Words I Learned: * Gambol- leap playfully * It is well worth while to attract them near the house so that one may enjoy the sight their gambols and minister to their wants by suitable diet. * Frolic- play lightheartedly * Then the window was opened and the nuts put on a table inside the room, and there little "Frolic" sits whilst we are at meals and forms one of the family * Whilst- while * Then the window was opened and the nuts put on a table inside the room, and there little "Frolic" sits whilst we are at meals and forms one of the family * Agile- mentally quick * One would not think she could catch the agile little creature. * Nectarines- smooth-skinned peach * They certainly nibble the young shoots of firs and horse-chestnuts unmercifully in the spring, and one very dry summer they took very kindly to our peaches and nectarines.

Things I learned from the topic: * The squirrel's great enemy is the cat. * They chase each other round a tree-stem with wonderful agility * They express their animosity with angry grunts and a stamp of the foot like a rabbit. * I have learnt that the squirrel's tail has quite a language of its own.

The most interesting thing I learned about the topic: I have learnt that the squirrel's tail has quite a language of its own. It can be curved over its back and so spread out that on a wet day it forms a complete shelter from rain. It will take the form of a note of interrogation or lie flat on the ground, stand out at an angle or bristle with anger, according to the mood of the possessor.

I think the essay did a good job

In 1965, a peculiar chimpanzee was the center of attention as scientists utilized American Sign Language in hopes of communicating efficiently with another species. The female chimpanzee was named Washoe. While this was by no means a quick study, scientists patiently taught Washoe for years and by the time she was an adult, Washoe had been about to spontaneously and appropriately use 350 different signs. It is still under much controversy that she could effectively use this language in complex sentences, or if she had just learned signs for being rewarded. Either way, the debate about, non-human primates having the intellectual capacity for language, remains highly contested.…

Language is used by a variety of different species to communicate. For example, Karl Von-Frisch (1950) after having studied bees, found that bees once they had returned to their hives performed certain dances to communicate other bees where and how far the food was. Moreover, Seyfarth et al. (1980), after having studied velvet monkeys, found that they communicated to their members the type of predators by giving different alarms calls. So for example if it were an eagle to look out for, the monkey's call would cause its members to look up in the sky, where as if it were a leopard, its members would immediately climb in the trees (Cooper T and Kaye H, 2007). Therefore it can be said that animals, just as humans do, use language to…

Back from our trip to Esselworld ; that evening we cousins were zealously chatting in our living room. When suddenly the door bell rang. Instantly, all eyes were on me. Oh! How I hate to be interrupted when it is my turn to speak. Apparently, it was assumed that the eldest among siblings would do the prestigious task of opening the door. Well at that point of time, in order to impress everyone, I followed the ritual and answered the door. At the door stood my nosey poker neighbour and I presumed that she was here to complain about the noise from our house.…
