Squirrel Bowl BANG! BANG! BANG! Those are the typical sounds heard in the woods on the first Saturday of October. What are you those sounds? They are gun shots that are being fired by the many hunters trying to kill their first squirrel of the season. Sure there are more things to hunt other than just squirrels but the most common and most important in small town Deville is none other than squirrel hunting. Several people hunt for either just the sport of the game or to provide food. Others even use their kill for other thing such as the coat of their kill or to even mount it to provide decoration in their homes. Hunting takes place everywhere in the world, including the United

This way, the players could do as they wish Friday and it not affect the football game at all. When the game was moved to Thursday night it made a difference dramatically. Coach Cole knew that the only reason that they weren’t doing as well as they could before is because he needed his whole team to be able to play not just half. Once the game was moved to Thursday night, Squirrel Bowl became even more publicized and popular. Everyone in the surrounding cities found it so strange that the opening of squirrel season was so big of a deal that something as small as a high school football game was better being rescheduled for a more convenient time for the players. Not only did this accommodate the players of the football team but also the coaches, high school faculty that had to work at the game, and the fans in the Buckeye …show more content…
Block High School is located in Jonesville, Louisiana about a thirty minute drive away. The Buckeye Panthers played the Block Bears in the Squirrel Bowl annually from there on out. In 2004, Block High School then decided that they no longer wanted to participate in the Thursday night game like they had been for the last several years. Soon after that decision was made, Holy Savior Menard’s football coach, Rodger Herrington, said that him and his team would like to play Coach Cole and the Buckeye Panthers in the Squirrel Bowl to continue the tradition. Coach Herrington also suggested that a trophy be made for the winning

There were many types of ground sloths which lived within the past at approximately 1,000kg, 20 foot in length and 12 feet tall they were known to be the size of elephants! They lived within forests and woods but also lived within the Pleistocene (The Great Ice Age) which made it difficult as most of the land and oceans were covered in ice and glaziers. The Giant Ground Sloths lived in these environments as they were herbivores, as of their peg-like teeth. But they also had beneficial adaptations such as their long-curved claws which were perfect for reaching high branches and stripping leaves, as well as protection from predators. The ground sloths evolved to South America around 35 million years ago. It is believed that…

Introduction: The broader context of this lab was aimed at observing animals and documenting specific animal behavior patterns. Specifically, we were trying to determine if squirrels applied snakeskin randomly to certain areas of their body or if there was a specific technique to it in relation to escaping their predators. After an animal has determined that a predator is nearby, it must then take action to avoid encountering this threat. Encounters are most easily avoided by preventing predators from detecting prey in the first instance (Rosier & Langklide, 2011), for squirrels this type of behavior is known as SSA, “snake scent application”. In this lab we wanted to study two different species of squirrels, S. beecheyi and S. variegatus, in order to evaluate if SSA can be deemed as a species specific type of behavior. My hypothesis was that squirrels applied the snake skin scent to specific parts of their body in an organized manner. The null hypothesis is that squirrels apply the snake skin scent randomly to parts of their body. My prediction of my hypothesis was that squirrels apply the snake skin scent to body parts that they find prove to be advantageous when trying to escape their predators.…

Sloths are cool and interesting animals. They are excellent climbers; in fact, they learn to climb from their parents. they also learn what food to eat by watching their mother eat. Sloths don’t really learn anything (except climbing and what to eat) from their parents because they, well, don’t really do anything. Pretty much all sloths do is eat, sleep, and hang upside down.…

Hunting is a popular entertainment in the United States and particularly in the state of Texas. Roughly four percent of Americans are hunters, and their family members are generally supporters of hunting. In Texas, nearly eight percent of people, along with some of their family members, participate in and admire hunting. Many states issue licenses for hunting and allocate certain forest areas for hunters. During the hunting seasons, hunters, some with their interested family members as well, flock into designated areas, shoot and kill such animals as deer and birds, and enjoy the practice. From their viewpoint, hunting is a source of…

It’s November, so that means its deer season. Every year deer season starts on the second weekend of November and last for ten days. I get really excited around August because during this time my family and I start exploring the woods looking for signs of deer. We look for signs like scrapes on trees, footprints, and tall grass that looks like it has been laid on and flattened. We set salt blocks out around our tree stands and set our cameras out hoping to catch a picture of a big buck. After we finish all the preparing we wait until the first week of November. During the first week of November we go back to our stands, check the salt blocks, set new blocks out, and grab our cameras to take back home. Once we get home we look at the pictures…

To my family, and myself, the idea of hunting means that food is going to be on the dinner table. It means that we are going to kill an animal, butcher it ourselves, and eventually eat the meat of our harvest. It is an appreciation of the wild animals; the ones placed on this Earth to roam the hills and graze the grass, rather than the ones grown in barns and factories. It means utilizing every part of that animal to our best ability, and wasting nothing. We even go as far as to donate the brain and heart of the deer to the local high school for use of dissection in science laboratories. We appreciate the animal in every way we can. It has given us everything (literally) that it has, and we will respect this animal for a time far longer after it’s depart from Earth.…

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
