Sprague Dawley Rats
Breast cancer is an incredibly common issue for American women. Research has shown that dietary factors may have an influence on the incidence of this cancer. This study implemented a feeding protocol with female Sprague-Dawley rats (a widely used albino laboratory rat) to test the effects of two ratios of carbohydrates and their effects on the early progression of breast cancers. The researchers used N-methyl-N-nitrosourea to induce mammary tumors when the rats were at 52 days of age. After induction, the rats were assigned to either a low protein/high carbohydrate diet or a high protein/moderate carbohydrate diet for 10 weeks. The rats ate 3 meals a day to closely simulate human absorption and metabolism patterns.

The effect of lycopene on 7,12 dimethyl benz(a)anthracene (DMBA) induced experimental breast cancer was investigated in female Sprague Dawley rats. Histopathological examination revealed the formation of tumor and angiogenesis in DMBA-induced rats and these abnormal changes were ameliorated by treatment with lycopene. The protective effect of lycopene was inherent to the increase of the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) and glutathione (GSH). Flux cytometry and gene expression analyses indicated that lycopene inhibits breast tumorigenesis by promoting apoptosis in mammary tissue through the mediation of pro- and anti-apoptotic biomarkers. Further analyses suggested that the antitumor…

This is clearly demonstrated in the scene where the rats were exposed to a carcinogen called aflatoxin and later on feeding on a diet of casein, the main protein found in milk. Half of the rats were fed 20% casein while the rest were fed 5% casein. After few weeks of experiments, the rats fed 20% casein had a greatly enhanced level of early liver cancer or tumor growth while the rats fed 5% casein had no evidence of cancer whatsoever. The significance of this experiment was to show the effects of animal protein in our body. Another significant moment is when lee Fulkerson goes on and talks about how the fast food industry was exploding and more overscheduled Americans were using it as a convenient way to feed themselves and their families (Forks over Knives). Fulkerson affirms that, “As fast foods was sweeping the nation, the rate of cancer deaths was continuing to rise [and] as a result, in 1971, the president Nixon initiated a program that was dubbed “The war on cancer” (Forks over Knives). .” The significance of this quote was that the rise of fast food companies increased the rate of the cancer in…

The next step to understanding the microenvironment’s effects, is to understand what can affect the microenvironment, either directly or indirectly. Research into the gut microbiota, which is found in most multicellular organisms, has shown to be a significant effector on the host; whereas both overgrowth of microbes and the lack of can be associated with digestive disorders, obesity, and cancer 1. This article focused on the development of mammary cancer, which causes the most neoplasia-related mortality cases, and on a frequent colonizer of the mice gut, the enteric bacteria Helicobacter hepaticus…

I did this because since those are the number of females having litters, and each female has six rats in each litter, then I would multiply the total number of females having litters by six. For example, on day 241 there are 22 females having litters. So, I multiplied 22 by 6 and got that total number of rats born that day was 132. Then, to find out the number of females, I divided the total number of rats born by two because half of the litters are females. So, on day 241, there are 66 females born that day because half of 132 is 66.…

The Paleo diet substitutes protein for carbs which causes most people on the diet to eat much more protein than they need. According to nutritionist Dr. Mercola, “Replacing carbs with too much protein can actually cause health challenges similar to eating too many grain carbs and sugars” (Mercola). Mercola also states that excessive protein can open the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway, which can lead to increased risk of cancer. In addition to excessive protein, the Paleo diet lacks key nutrients, including calcium and vitamin D. The total restriction of dairy in the Paleo diet causes the absence of nutrients. According to the UC Davis Health System, “Not getting enough calcium increases the risk of osteoporosis, rickets and bone fractures” (Is Paleo Safe?). These risks associated with the Paleo diet can pose a significant threat and should be considered carefully. Numerous alternatives to the Paleo diet exist and many people benefit more from other standard…

There are many positive benefits with a phytoestrogen-rich diet, especially one rich in legumes, fruit and other fibers ("Phytoestrogens: pros and," 2000). With the negatives, doctors are concerned that women who have had hormonally dependent cancers - breast, ovarian, uterine - may be causing more problems than they solve with diets rich in phytoestrogens, since they act similar to estrogen naturally produced in the body - but are much weaker ("Phytoestrogens: pros and," 2000). Furthermore, there is not enough evidence that supports that phytoestrogens are the correct supplement to take instead of estrogen for specific health conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease or high cholesterol.…
