The great damage done to the Cricket is by match-fixing allegations every now and then. Spot-fixing means that player or the whole team accepts money from the bookies to intentionally play badly. Players also have been taking money to give information about the pitch and the weather conditions. Generally players deny any kind of charges put on them, but in some cases players have admitted their involvement in either spot-fixing or illegal activities. For instance Australia’s legendary fast bowler Dennis Lillie revealed in his autobiography that he took money from gambler and bowled badly in a Teat match.
The most dramatic event in this regard happened recently when the British police charged three players of the Pakistan Cricket Team including their captain for spot-fixing in a Test match and taking money from a bookie of India. All of them found guilty and banned for 5 year. This was great setback to Pakistan cricket. In the past it was said that Cricket is a game of gentlemen. But now it has become the game of gamblers.
The present situation is such that even if the players are fully determined and are giving their hundred percent, yet if they lose, fans think that the match was fixed. Cricket lovers are generally of the opinion that the game has lost its charm and glory due to the trend of match-fixing.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) should take this issue seriously and take concrete steps to stop this practice which also is a major threat for the popularity and promotion of the game. I personally think that the ICC should impose a life-time ban on any player who is proved guilty of match and spot fixing by an independent judiciary.
In the end let’s pray that the players do justice to the game and not get involved in this bad habit so that cricket can once again become the game of gentlemen.
