Sport Pyramid
Week 1
Q1. What’s my understanding of the Sport Pyramid? Give examples.
Sports pyramid shows the Structure of Sporting Organization, Government Systems in Sports and, explain what is sports/sport management. One example to explain the Sport Pyramid is the 2013 Sundown Marathon. It all start from the HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd.
HiVelocity is responsible organizer to manage the 2013 Sundown Marathon. But without a corporate sport support they could not run and start to plan the event. So somehow they have the support from Aviva that convince with their proposal and sponsor for the next 6 years. From there they start their plans and marketing alongside with their official partner, Koufu, NParks and Health Promotion Board.
Next is the officials that is support by Singapore Sports Council and Triathlon Singapore. They will bring up the rules n regulations that they need for the whole events. Event officials reserve the right, to modify, supplement or waive all or part of the event rules. New Balance became the co-sponsorship for the sports goods of the marathon. New Balance had provide the participants an exclusive New Balance event singlet alongside with other goodies. They also give out the New Balance Finisher T-shirts. This is all the sporting goods in the events that had been sponsored by New Balance.
Lastly is the Sport Development. The mass participation like runners, volunteers, medic and etc. 100 plus came in to join as the official hydration. Maxinutrition is the official nutrition. Nathan is the official hydration belt. Polar is the official training computer. And Seiko is the official timekeeper for the whole entire event. In total 30,000 runners took part over the two night event, including the corporate runners. This is one example of how the sport pyramid goes about.

Instead of a salary cap, Major League Baseball implements a luxury tax (also called a competitive balance tax), an arrangement in which teams whose total payroll exceeds a certain figure (determined annually) are taxed on the excess amount in order to discourage large market teams from having a substantially higher payroll than the rest of the league. The tax is paid to the league, which then puts the money into its industry-growth fund. A team that goes over the luxury tax cap for the first time in a five-year period pays a penalty of 22.5% of the amount they were over the cap, second-time violators pay a 30% penalty, and teams that exceed the limit three or more times pay a 50% penalty from 2013 onwards. There is also an incentive to lower payroll; if in any year a team goes under the threshold, the penalty rate decreases to 17.5%, 25% or 40% (depending on prior record over the previous five years) for the next time the tax is paid, which will apply from 2013.The cap limit for 2011-2013 is $178 million, and for 2014-2016 $189 million.…

“Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” article by Jessica Statsky convinces adults how competitive organized sports are harmful to children. First of all, Jessica Statsky explains organized sports are not always joyful. The competitiveness sucks out the fun for kids. She states, “Adults regard Little League Baseball and PeeWee Football as a basic part of childhood, the games are not always joyous ones.” Kids have to live up to parents and coaches exceptions. Competitiveness led kids into believing that they are worth for their abilities. They will, unfortunately, adopt this habits for future. However, I believe competitiveness can be beneficial to the kids. It can encourage children to excel. But this should not affect kids self-esteem.…

Sports are cultural practices that differ from place to place and time to time. How they are defined, organized, and integrated into social life varies from group to group. To understand sports we must view them as social phenomena (Coakley & Donnelly, 2004). Viewing sports as a social phenomena means that one must realize that are many topics to be questioned and viewed upon with an open mind.…

"Organizational structure refers to the division of labor as well as the patterns of coordination, communication, work flow, and formal power that direct organizational activities."(Mcshane & Von Glinow, 2005, 446) What kind of structure does GS represent? When considering the structure of a particular company, there are several aspects at which to look. Is the structure formalized (where the product is adhered to based on exact standardizations, much like McDonald's) or non-formalized (where every product is made to specification at that time, or customized)? Does the company have centralized power (where the power and information is in the hands of few at the top of the hierarchy) or decentralized power (where the span of control is spread over many seniors and leaders)? How about a balance of both? Is the company mechanistic ("Some companies, such as McDonald's, have a mechanistic structure, which is characterized by a narrow span of control and high degree of formalization and centralization."(Mcshane & Von Glinow, 453-454)) or organic ("it has a wide span of control, decentralized decision making, and little formalization. Tasks are fluid, adjusting to new situations and organizational needs. The organic structure values knowledge and takes the view that information may be located anywhere in the organization rather than among senior executives."(Mcshane & Von Glinow, 454)? Further, how are the employees departmentalized? In the case of good sport, it is a mixture of many of the available options. Although the concepts did change throughout the simulation, the main structure of the company was a mixture of mechanistic and organic functional departmentalization. This means that there is standardization to the way things are, and while some of the power stays at the top, it is given out to distribute power. This increases morale and helps keep managers happy. This is…
