My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve learned how to build a strong résumé and cover letter, and how do professional interviews well. We also get the chance to observe and participate in a medical environment. I’ll be shadowing with Dr. Steve Carr at Northern Star Therapy and learn the basics of physical therapy. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Along with classes, I participated in medical-oriented clubs such as Health Professionals of America, which helped me experience life in the medical field. As well as clubs, I was an active player in the Girl’s Basketball team in freshman year. I also take archery lessons to improve my dexterity and stamina, which taught me the importance of persistence for improvement. Both my family and my own interest in medicine inspired me to pursue a career path towards Biology in college. Since medicine is increasingly becoming more corporal, I chose to complete a double degree in Biology and Healthcare Management- an option that only UT Dallas…

Sports medicine is a lot more than people think it is. It is not just running out on the football field when someone gets injured and walking them to the sidelines and making sure they are okay, it is not just telling someone not to play a sport for a certain amount of time so that they can let their body take a rest. It is looking into the body and figuring out which muscles and bones cannot handle as much pressure and pain as the others. It is surgery and sometimes crushing people’s dreams of never being able to play their favorite sport again.…

What if people lived healthier lives, practiced preventive medicine, and took precautions against illness and disease? My days in the physical therapy department often made me think about the prevention of injuries as well as the injuries themselves. I was already doubting my future career choice as a physical therapist. Although I loved the science of it and helping people, the lack of variety within the field and its limited options for growth bothered me. I needed a career that helped a large number of people, emphasized prevention and primary care rather than tertiary care, and would continually challenge and motivate me to improve. Knowing that I really did not want to pursue physical therapy as I had originally planned, my thoughts wandered to the area of public health, particularly health management.…
