Spontaneous Human Combustion Case Study
Spontaneous Human Combustion

Spontaneous Human Combustion(SHC) pertains to the burning of a person's body occurring without an outside source of ignition. The characteristics of SHC varies form different cases but most of the time evidences gathered are more likely show similar clues which we can relate to other SHC cases. Now, the evidences gathered are as follows; the victim is an elderly, the furniture around the victim stayed untouched, a part of the ceiling above the victim was damaged, the victim was reduced to ash with only her extremities(foot) left and no outside source of ignition was observed. All of which are surprisingly similar evidences to all cases hypothesized as SHC.
As one of the investigators, I strongly agree that this case is caused by SHC. It was due to four facts that I had observed. First, all of the evidences gathered ate identical to all cases concluded as SHC cases.

The victim possibly drank alcohol beverages which can make her combustibility increased in such a way that even a small amount of heat can set up a combustion process. Also, another scenario is the presence of perfume in her clothes of the victim can trigger enough ignitions to make the clothes on fire. This small amount of heat and fire slowly makes the human body dry then lately it will continuously consume fats as the combustible material and as a fuel within our skin setting the whole body on fire. Most of the fats are located in the mid part of our body, which is why in SHC cases most part that are left behind are the extremities (foot,

Also, based on the statements made by the occupants regarding smoking cigarettes, I would want to know more about how they normally discarded/dispose of their cigarette butts. Are they dumping an ashtray in a trashcan inside or outside? Could there have been an ashtray on the table next to the sofa which contained either a still lit cigarette or a smoldering cigarette? If so, what type of ashtray? Metal, glass, heavy or lightweight? If any windows were open and the ashtray was light enough, could it have blown off or blown then cigarette off onto the sofa and ignited the fire? This is a working theory because there are questions which need to be…

Since I’ve always considered a lit candle unimportant in the general scheme of things, I never truly realized (until I watched the fire safety video) how dangerous even a small flame can be. For me it was tough to realize that no matter how good it smells or how calming it may be, a lit candle still an open flame and even though it is not probable, something unexpected may happen and something could easily light on fire. I found the video off of one of the blogs that was posted on the website you sent. The video really opened my eyes on how fast a fire can spread, especially in a 8’x19’ room filled with papers, wood desks, and many other, extremely flammable things. Our rooms are full of things that would immediately fuel the flames. Also, if the fire alarm were to go off, the sprinklers would begin to spray not only my room, but also the entire building drenching everything. Then the fire department would be sent and in moments things could go completely wrong. Knowing that I could have been the person behind all of that, I would never be able to forgive myself. Through watching this video and reading various articles and blogs on pbfeducation.org. I found a lot about…

Arson is one of the world’s oldest known crimes. It can cost a life or a generous amount of money in damages. Even though it can take a person’s life, arson is classified as a property crime to law enforcement agencies. It is time consuming and very difficult to investigate. Only twenty percent of arrests result in a conviction because it is classified as a “property crime” rather than a violent crime. The motives of arson range from profit to murder. People who use arson use it because it’s a quick easy act of terrorism to a person or company they are trying to hurt. I believe there should be more and better adequate training for investigators and prosecutors to put away the people that can commit such a crime.…

For starters, why would someone even want to burn property? Many people assume that the people that are setting these fires are always troubled teenagers acting in revenge, but in fact, revenge related fires involving teenagers is decreasing as a cause for arson. The more common reason for committing arson is so a person can lie to the insurance company and gain money. Sometimes business owners even hire professional arsonists to burn down their business without leaving a trace of arson. This reason is becoming more prevalent in society than troubled teenagers. Another, however least common, reason for a person to commit arson is because they enjoy watching the flames consume the building or other structure. In other words, that person would be a pyromaniac. People also intentionally set fires to cover up another crime such as murder.…
