The story starts with older Gene going back to the New Hampshire prep school he attended alongside Phineas, and their other friend Leper, to reminisce on memories he made at Devon fifteen years earlier, that greatly affected his life. Phineas, who appears to be the leader of the group, decides that they should jump out of the tree into the river. As a result of leaving, Junior lost his best friend, gained a new friend, had an identity problem and now he feels to blame for the deaths of his sister. After leaving the reservation, Juniors sister mary got married and moved to Montana. Furthermore, Mary lived in a trailer home with her husband. After drinking so much one night Mary and her husband knocked out in their bedroom. Therefore, someone left the stove on and as a result of that, mary and her husband burned to death. Mary's dream was to write a romance novel but because she lost hope, after Junior left the reservation mary ran off to live her romance novel. At the funeral, Junior ran into the woods where he saw rowdy crying, “It’s all your fault… your sister is dead because of you left us. You killed her” (211). In this story, the main character Dave Sexton lives on a small farm with his mother and his father Luster Sexton. His family is relatively poor and as a result Dave has to balance both school and working on his father’s farm everyday. The story begins when Dave is on a field trip with his classmates. He and his friends end up accidentally destroying someone's property and as a result they have to pay for the damage. All of the students had enough money to pay the debt off except for Dave. Because of this, his teacher, Professor Herbert made him stay after school to work in order to pay the debt off in a different way. When Dave gets home and explains what happened to his father, Luster becomes very anger. Luster had never gone to school, but he did not want Dave to live as difficult of a life as he did. Luster believes that it is unfair for Dave to suffer an extra punishment just because he comes from a poor family. Luster then decides to go to school with Dave the next day to confront his teacher. Once he arrives, he angrily explains to Professor Herbert his opinion on the matter. The father begins spending less and less time at home, resulting in Dave getting even more beatings from his mother because she is blaming him for the issues in her marriage. That summer the family goes on a vacation and it seems as if Dave and his mother are getting along better until one day he is playing with his brothers and she scolds him for being too loud and is not allowed to go with them to the slide. Dave's mother punishes him even further by taking a dirty diaper and smearing it in his face, trying to get him to eat it. When he refuses she hits him and then the abuse stops long enough for her to tend to the baby and then she rubs another dirty diaper into Dave's face and tells him again to eat it. Just in time, the family returns and the abuse stops with his mother throwing a washcloth at him to clean himself up and then forces him to sit in the corner for the remainder of the night.
