Witches are known to be very dangerous, evil, and made deals with the devil. They were even killed, tortured and jailed, but nowadays we treat them completely differently. We invite them into our house, give them candy, and strike conversations with them, that is at least on halloween. In the late 1600s many older men and women were being caught as being “witches” in Salem, Massachusetts. These witch trials were being caused by young girls who were pretending just to get ergotism, attention, and eventually after one lie they got out control really quickly.…

One of the first major sins depicted in the Old Testament was the first murder in Genesis. In which Cain killed his brother Abel because he was driven mad by jealousy. He was jealous that god favored Abel’s sacrifice of fruit from the ground over his portions of fat. God saw Cain was angry and warned him to do the right thing or sin was ready to consume him. And it did…

His father, for example, was not an evil man, however he was a compulsive liar who was able to work in positions built off the platform of his false background. Cathy, Adam’s wife, would be another example because she killed her parents, lied about her whole life, and even shot Adam, but he still could not see her for who she was. After the departure of Cathy he did little to take care of his sons and rather grieved the loss and betrayal of his wife. It was stated that “He was aware of the twins because he heard them cry and laugh, but he felt a distaste for them. To Adam they were symbols of his loss”(250). This behavior would continue until Adam, Samuel, and Lee began to discuss the biblical story of Cain and Abel in which Cain kills Abel out of jealousy and is then told by God to overcome sin and is banished “East of Eden”. Lee believed that the story was altered in translation and stated “The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin…The King James translation makes a promise in ‘Thou Shalt’, meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word, the word timshel-,’Thou mayest’- that gives a choice”(301). It was the word “timshel” that would forever change…

    The War Prayer Analysis

“The War Prayer” by Samuel L. Clemens, is his attempt to force the public to realize the implicit outcome of praying for victory in war, which inevitably is death. His use of irony and hyperbole is evident in this clever narrative. The passage satirically describes how a very religious town comes together during a time of war to pray for the downfall of the enemy and the triumph of their men. An old man then comes into the church and prays the same exact prayer that the townspeople are praying without concealing the truth. Clemens uses the old man to identify his purpose of the narrative, ignorance to war.…

Abi has made sinners of us all. I had sworn my name to child’s stories. I never saw goody Osburn a witch, but Abi -the girls. They cry, they scream, they-they choke. I look, as hard as I can but I – I don’t see, I see nothin’. And I lie. Every lie that escapes my mouth, I feel the weight of the noose burden my shoulders. Bucklin’ my knees, clasping my throat, pushin’, pressing, tightening. My skin turns to ice from fear that Hathorne will question and he will see, my pretence will be known. I can hear their haunting cries of witchcraft if I dare testify their pretence to save my soul. Gad dams all liars. I never seen no spirits. The girls, they look to Abi, they too lie, I know it be true. They see nothing. Those not witness, to invisible crimes are accused. We - I had to choose. I must be a witness, bound to Abi, bound to witchcraft. I’ve placed my soul within Devil’s reach.…

It has become quite apparent of the mass spread of witches and witchcraft. However, I do not think inquisitors and folks such as Sir Kramer should put all their efforts and forces in sniffing out witches like hungry dogs. I do believe in ridding the evil polluting our lands. Though, I am a peaceful man, and I strongly suggest another approach deviating from Sir Kramer’s zealous methods. What we need to do is separate the most heinous witches from the rest by looking into what types of witchcraft they dabble in. Those that have not killed will be offered salvation. We would lock them up in their local Church, under the eyes of God, for two months. There, they will attend mass, live on bread and water, and be blessed with holy water once per…

Arise, O Lord, and judge Thy cause. A wild boar has invaded Thy vineyard. Arise, O Peter, and consider the case of the Holy Roman Church, the mother of all churches, consecrated by thy blood. Arise, O Paul, who by thy teaching and death hast illumined and dost illumine the Church. Arise all ye saints, and the whole universal Church, whose interpretations of Scripture has been assailed. (papal bull of Pope Leo X, 1520)It truly seems to me that if this fury of the Romanists should continue, there is no remedy except that the emperor, kings, and princes, girded with force and arms, should resolve to attack this plague of all the earth no longer with words but with the sword. . . . If we punish thieves with the gallows, robbers with the sword, and heretics with fire, why do we not all the more fling ourselves with all our weapons upon these masters of perdition, these cardinals, these popes, and all this sink of Roman sodomy that ceaselessly corrupts the church of God and wash our hands in their blood so that we may free ourselves and all who belong to us from this most dangerous fire? (Martin Luther, 1521) Young people have lost that deference to their elders on which the social order depends; they reject all correction. Sexual offenses, rapes, adulteries, incests and seductions are more common than ever before. How monstrous that the world should have been overthrown by such dense clouds for the last three or four centuries, so that it could not see clearly how to obey Christ's commandment to love our enemies. Everything is in shameful confusion; everywhere I see only cruelty, plots, frauds, violence, injustice, shamelessness while the poor groan under the oppression and the innocent are arrogantly and outrageously harassed. God must be asleep. (John Calvin) The 16th century in Europe was a great century of change on many fronts. The humanists and artists of the Renaissance would help characterize the age as one of…
