Spirit of nationalism

I dropped my children to school and on the way, I saw soldiers in uniform and a young pupil who led the “Panatang Makabayan” during the regular Monday flag-raising activity in schools. I was touched by the scene and I likewise joined from afar. I felt proud and I promised myself I will be more aware of the affairs of our nation and even involve myself in activities, as well as my children, to make them understand their responsibilities as young Filipinos. I realized that at a very young age, they should learn to love their country to help them become productive citizens in the future.
Now I better appreciate the oath and that it is really a very important obligation for each Filipino to live what is said in the Panata, like the lines ……”Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas”, which is a testimony of each Filipino’s love for his country. It is easy to speak the words, but what we need today and in this generation, is, “isabuhay ang nilalaman ng Panatang Makabayan”.
The task of being truly patriotic Filipinos is very simple and easy. We should only devote each of our efforts to improve ourselves, become better citizens and be responsible not only to our families, to others, but moreso for the welfare of our nation. Let us revive the spirit of nationalism in our hearts.

The primary task for Filipinos is to raise their nationalistic consciousness, either through self or formal/informal education, beginning with a recognition and appreciation of their colonial mentality and exerting a conscious effort to discard it. It is only with Filipino nationalism, a nationalistic consciousness in his mind and heart will the Filipino be able to fight, deal and work with utmost determination for his own betterment and those of his children and grandchildren.…

Last July 28, 2014, President Benigno S. Aquino III had his fifth State of the Nation Address. This serves as a means to inform the nation about the present conditions of the country. SONA 2014 highlights the achievements of the administration on education, social services, economy, infrastructure, calamity efforts, jobs, rehabilitations after typhoons and earthquakes, modernization of AFP, security, ARMM Bangsamoro and livelihood. The President used many metaphors in uttering his speech, he started with a common Filipino saying, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makararating sa paroroonan.” It is just right because this is his second to the last year in service, before he entered, our country was filled with problems left unsolved. Before, we were considered “The Sick Man of Asia” with weak economy and sparse industry. Corruption was also endemic. And maybe when we look back to the past with a lot of problems impossible to solve, we will be motivated to correct mistakes, within the President’s leadership we began to hope and had our journey on a straight and righteous path or the so called “Tuwid na Daan.”…

The simple yet notably patriotic statement of the president earned the applause of the participants at the conference, in which hopefully the Filipinos appreciated it - regardless of their political stand about his administration. Come to think of it, it would be wonderful if the statement “I love the Philippines more” is likewise uttered – loud and proud – by every Filipino; with the ‘loving part’ put into action in perpetuum.…

As I read Rizal’s “Manifesto to Certain Filipinos” I have sighted his consistency and unalterable pronouncement of his firm stand apropos of insurrection deemed as a final, justifiable and only means plotted by his fellowmen; the Filipinos. The extent of the letter is a declaration of his firm stand and detestation of insurrection as a movement; he deemed one as such to be discouraged and never to be considered as a justifiable means to obtain independence. We have judged rightly that indeed he is an improbable person to have any schemes that shows his admiration of a drastic and disastrous reform. His words reflected on the lines mirrored his resistance for drastic change in the Philippine setback. As a person, Rizal was a pacifist by nature. He refuses to delve in matters hinting a want for revolt for which both party will suffer great casualties despite what profit and glory they may grasp in the end. And Rizal was never more right in believing so, for nothing benefited out of irrational and radical force was anymore than undignified nobility. We are right then to have proclaimed Rizal as the Philippines’ hero, for hero’s are not only the ones who have bravely died for what they cherished to believe, but for what they have modeled for people to believe that despite any setback and cruelty we could trounce the likes of which in a diplomatic and dignified way where no adversary can ever gainsay.…

I love having this identity. I love possessing these qualities - kayumanggi, pango, pandak, because these make me perfect, these make me a Filipino. I love how our natural beauty has become an avenue for us to conquer the world. I love how our recent Binibinis represent our country in the Miss Universe, not to mention being at the top 5 for four consecutive years. I love how our kababayans unite to support these beautiful young ladies and how we all connive to make sure that our representatives make it to the final cut. I love how this motivates us to continue to applaud those who have what it takes to stand up there in the stage or to a disparate extent, in a boxing ring, waving the flag that bears all abiding hopes, witnessed by 196…
