Spina Bifida Report
Chapter 11, Prepare a report on Spina Bifida. Spina bifida is a birth defect that affects the nerves in the spinal cord which sends the messages to the muscles that allow you to walk. The spinal cord is a tube of nerves that most of the time is closed, but rarely there is a hole in the tube of nerves. When this occurs the back opens up. Surgery can be performed on infants to close this opening.

One out of every one thousand babies are born with spina bifida. In 1992, the U.S. Public Health Service recommended that all women of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms of folic acid daily to reduce the risk of having a pregnancy affected by neural tube defects , such as spina bifida. It is made in the center of your brain and travels throughout your brain and down to your spinal cord. In hydrocephalus, the fluid is blocked at some point. The problem is that the brain is making more fluid. The hydrocephalus can be very deadly if you don 't have a device called a shunt installed surgically.

* Scoliosis- Scoliosis is one of the most common problems in spina bifida, Scoliosis is a problem with your spine causing it to bend sideways and twist. That is why you need scoliosis surgery to help your back to straighten up. To straighten your spine, the doctor attaches two stainless steel rods to either side of your spine by hooks attached to the vertebral bodies. A piece of bone from your hip will be applied to portions of your spine to fuse it. Your back won 't grow any more after it 's fused.

    What exactly is a spina bifida? Well it occurs when the fetus is growing in the womb and its spine doesn't form correctly.
