1. Introduction: A. Did you undergo a major surgery as a newborn? One out of seven out of ten thousand newborns undergo a major surgery because of a disease called spina bifida. B. A rare condition in which the backbone and spinal cord do not close before birth, mainly believed by a deficiency in folic acid provided by the mother. C. On average a toddler begins giving few steps at the age of 10 months; unlike a child with spina bifida it takes up to 2 years or maybe never

2. Body: A. 1. Spina bifida is a developmental birth defect caused by the incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube, in three different forms a. Some vertebrae overlying the spinal cord are not fully formed and remain unfused and open and if the opening is large enough, this allows a portion of the spinal cord to stick out through the opening in the bones which leads to the sac on the back.

B. 1. … placing the spinal cord and its nerve roots back inside the spine and covered with meninges, and a shunt may be surgically installed (In the head) to provide a continuous drain for the cerebrospinal fluid produced in the brain for hydrocephalus. This surgery is usually always done right after birth.
2 A spina bifida patient usually suffers from incontinence, partial or complete lack of sensation and paralysis of the legs, and usually takes antibiotics to treat or prevent commonly urinary tract infections.

Spina bifida is a birth defect that affects the nerves in the spinal cord which sends the messages to the muscles that allow you to walk. The spinal cord is a tube of nerves that most of the time is closed, but rarely there is a hole in the tube of nerves. When this occurs the back opens up. Surgery can be performed on infants to close this opening.…

Every year, 1,500 babies are born with this defect (source). There are three different types of spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta, meningocele, and myelomeningocele (source). The location of sina bifida most commonly occurs in the lower back, although ourences in the middle and upper back are possible. Occulta has little to no symptoms. Signs of this type can be a hairy patch, dimple, dark spot, or swelling on the back at the site of spina bifida. Meningocele typically causes mild problems with a sac of fluid present at the gap in the spine. The most severe form of spina bifida, Myelomeningocele, is also called open spina bifida (source). This type is associated with the worst syptoms such as poor ability to walk, problems with blader…

    Chiari Malformation

Chiari Malformation occurs when the section of the skull housing the cerebellum is to small or is deformed, putting pressure on and crowding the brain. The lowermost portions, or the cerebral spinal tonsils, are displaced into the upper spinal canal. When the cerebellum is pushed into the upper spinal canal, it can interfere with the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that protects your brain and spinal cord. This impaired circulation of CSF can lead to the blockage of signal transmitted from your brain to your body, or to a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain or spinal cord. This pressure upon the spinal cord or lower…

Spina bifida is a permanently disabling birth defect and can occur anywhere along the spine. It has 3 form variations in severity, which depends on location, size, nerve and spinal cord damage. The less severe, spina bifida occulta or “Hidden Spina Bifida”; the most severe, Myelomeningocele or “Open Spina bifida”; the most rare, meningocele. Spina bifida Occulta can also be called the Hidden Spina Bifida because about 15% of healthy people are not aware of having it. It usually causes no harm or impediment, and most people find out when they get an x-ray of their back for unrelated reasons. It could result in small gaps between the vertebrae, but it does not involve the nerves, which its why it…

Hydrocephalus is commonly referred to as "water on the brain." The so-called "water" is actually cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a clear liquid that looks like water and is produced in the 4 ventricles (cavities) of the brain, connected by narrow pathways, leading to an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) [2]. This condition is likely to be fatal if not treated. Fitting of a ventricular shunt diverts the excess fluid from the brain to the thoracic cavity and is a very effective treatment for hydrocephalus. However, these shunts block regularly and their failure is difficult to detect, consuming clinical time and computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. A shunt failure would be easy to diagnose if the ICP could be measured routinely…

Spina bifida, means “cleft spine”. It is characterized by the partial development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or meninges (the protective covering around the brain and spinal cord). Spina bifida comes from Latin and literally means "split" or "open" spine. Spina bifida occurs at the end of the first month of pregnancy when the two sides of the embryo's spine fail to join together, leaving an open area. In some cases, the spinal cord or other membranes may push through this opening in the back. The condition usually is detected before a baby is born and treated right away.…

If the mother has infections such as the chicken pox or mumps during pregnancy it makes the risk of the baby having hydrocephalus greater because the infection creates a blockage in the brain which doesn’t allow the CSF fluid to drain properly and when this happens it starts to put pressure on the brain causing the embryos head to enlarge. Some malformations of the brain may cause hydrocephalus such as spinal bifida and dandy-walker syndrome as well. Also it can occur when the ventricles produce too much CSF fluid or when the bloodstream cannot reabsorb the fluid that was produced. “Each year, 1 in 1,000 children are born and diagnosed with hydrocephalus.” This is fairly large number especially when the latest statistics reveal that a child is born in the U.S. every 8.1 seconds, meaning that a child is born with hydrocephalus every 135…

    Case Study Hydrocephalus

Although a prognosis for an active case of hydrocephalus may prove difficult to achieve, there are some relations between the cause and the outcome. Disorders can at times cause the prognosis to be difficult along with the time at which the condition was diagnosed. The reason behind this is that disorders can be mistaken for other conditions. That is why CT, MRI and ultrasound exams are performed to ensure that there is a case of hydrocephalus. In terms of time, a prognosis can be done too late. That is why the diagnosis needs to be done immediately and accurately. Parents, relatives, and friends must understand that this condition affects both cognitive and physical attributes. Although this may be the case, rehabilitation centers are available for those who are diagnosed with hydrocephalus. If this condition is untreated, this may become fatal for the confirmed diagnosed. The prognosis for normal hydrocephalus and obstructive hydrocephalus differs in certain aspects. The symptoms for normal hydrocephalus typically gets more dangerous over time if it is left untreated. This makes the prognosis more difficult due to inaccurate or no treatment. Just as all potential fatal conditions, it can be prevented with immediate action. Finding the cause and indications early on, will lead to a quick and accurate diagnosis after consistent studies from CT, MRI, and ultrasound scans. Therefore along with an accurate diagnosis, a step-by-step prognosis can be achieved to provide the patient with excellent care to prevent the spread of the condition and possibly eliminate it from within. Aside from performing an MRI, CT, and ultrasound, there is another way within diagnostic x-rays to treat…
